Ravichandran Ashwin Test Career

Ravichandran Ashwin is seen as one of India’s top off-spinners and an exceptional all-rounder in modern Test cricket. Since making his debut in late 2011, he paired clever off-spin bowling with solid contributions from the lower order. He soon turned into a key player both at home and abroad. This article looks at Ashwin’s Test career, covering his total wickets, centuries, and top score, and discusses his standing among the best Test bowlers and all-rounders in history.

A Closer Look at Ravichandran Ashwin’s Test Career

The Chennai-born off-spinner brought his Test career to a close after representing India in 106 matches between November 2011 and December 2024. The veteran all-rounder announced his retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, shortly after the third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw.

Across his 106 appearances, the seasoned campaigner bowled 4,541 overs and collected 537 wickets at an average of 24.00, maintaining an economy rate of 2.83 and a strike rate of 50.7. With the bat, the right-hander contributed 3,503 runs at an average of 25.75, registering six centuries and 14 half-centuries, underlining his impact as a genuine Test all-rounder.

His wicket haul included 37 five-wicket innings and eight ten-wicket match hauls, highlighting his consistency and match-winning ability. The highlight of his bowling career came in Indore in 2016, where he returned figures of 7/59 against New Zealand, alongside his best match figures of 13/140 in the same Test.

Highest Test Score by Ravichandran Ashwin: Match and Context

Ravichandran’s highest Test score, 124, came against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in November 2013, where a 280-run seventh-wicket partnership with the Mumbai batter helped India recover from 156/6 and take control of the match.

After the visitors were bowled out for 234, India slipped to 156/6 before Ashwin joined debutant Rohit Sharma at the crease. The pair added 280 runs for the seventh wicket, which remains India’s highest partnership for that position in Test cricket.

Ashwin struck 11 boundaries in his 210-ball innings, while Sharma went on to score 177, taking India to 453. The match ended inside three days, with India winning by an innings and 51 runs, supported by a five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami in the second innings. The performance underlined Ashwin’s value as a lower-order batter capable of changing the course of a Test match.

Ashwin as a Test All-Rounder: Records and Achievements

Ashwin has taken 537 wickets and scored 3,503 runs in Test cricket, putting him in the top group of cricket’s all-rounders. He stands out as the first Indian cricketer to score 3,000 runs and take 500 wickets in Test matches.

He has also achieved the rare feat of hitting a century and getting a five-wicket haul in the same Test four times. This is the best record for any Indian player and is behind Ian Botham’s five instances worldwide. These remarkable accomplishments highlight his ability to win matches with his skills in both batting and bowling.

Ashwin secured his 11th Player of the Series award in Test matches, tying with Muttiah Muralitharan’s record. Ashwin reached this achievement in 44 Test series, while Muralitharan needed 61 to do the same. Ashwin took 374 wickets in winning matches, maintaining an outstanding average of 18.99. This ranks as the fifth-highest wicket total by any player in victorious games, with 69.65 percent of his career wickets coming from such matches.

In September 2024, he scored his sixth Test century, an unbeaten 113 in Chennai against Bangladesh, rescuing India from 144/6.
