“No Government Interferences in BCB Election, ” Says Aminul Islam

Aminul Islam

Cricket Bangladesh board president Aminul Islam has denied the claims of political or government intervention in the BCB Election, saying that all his decisions were in accordance with the constitution of the board. His remarks were made as the election was underway on October 6, after weeks of legal setbacks and allegations of manipulation on the part of the cricketing fraternity in Bangladesh.

The Letter That Sparked the Dispute

The issue began on 18th September when Aminul Islam wrote to the sports secretary of the country to cancel the nomination forms of the councilors, and directed that new forms be submitted for the BCB Election.

This action sparked an immediate backlash, and a writ petition was filed questioning the legality of the letter issued by Aminul. On 22 September, the High Court granted an interim order that stayed the provisions of Aminul’s letter and stayed the election process.

However, later, to restore the suspension granted by the High Court, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Farah Mahbub, allowed the BCB Election to be held in the midst of the ensuing controversy.

Aminul Islam Defends His Actions

In an interview following the ruling, Aminul Islam clarified that his actions were motivated purely by procedural irregularities, not politics.

“I want to clarify one thing. There was a writ against my letter,” Aminul said. The letters addressed to me as BCB president mentioned three important areas in the BCB Election, and only three districts qualified under the constitution. We couldn’t conduct an election with just three. I was forced to send the letter on September 18, based on the constitution.”

He explained that he had received incomplete councilor lists from the districts and divisions, many missing either a cricketer or an organizer, which are mandatory according to BCB rules. “It was not possible to proceed with such limited names,” he added.

“No Government Interference,” Says Aminul Islam

Responding to questions about alleged government involvement, Aminul Islam dismissed the claims and thanked the national sports adviser for supporting a fair process.

“I didn’t think there was any influence,” he said. “The sports adviser helped ensure that we could have a fair election and form a good board. I feel I need to continue for Bangladesh cricket. If anyone feels I am not good enough, I’m ready to leave any time.”

Aminul’s comments came amid rising tension between the BCB’s administration and key figures in the cricket fraternity, who accused the leadership of favoritism and procedural manipulation.

Tamim Iqbal’s Withdrawal and Faruque Ahmed’s Return

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal withdrew from the BCB Election, alleging interference in the nomination process—particularly referencing Aminul’s September 18 letter. Tamim claimed the decision undermined the integrity of the process and discouraged independent participation.

Adding to the intrigue was the surprise return of Faruque Ahmed, who previously lost the presidency in May. Despite reported disagreements with the sports ministry, Faruque became a BCB councillor again—his nomination form reportedly submitted hours past the deadline. The move drew criticism for appearing inconsistent with the board’s commitment to transparency.

Court Approves BCB Election Date

After receiving clarification from the Supreme Court that there are no legal impediments to holding the BCB Election on 6 October, the voting proceeded as planned. While Aminul expressed satisfaction with the outcome, there are still many public concerns regarding the legitimacy of the nomination process.

According to legal experts, this case raises wider issues about the structures of governance in Bangladeshi sport—where political mandate, executive authority, and sports autonomy often overlap. The constitution of BCB has been revised on several occasions, but it still lacks clarity surrounding such key processes as the selection of councillors and the oversight of elections.

The Future: Reform and Accountability.

Aminul Islam, if re-elected, has promised to maintain a policy of zero tolerance for conflict of interest cases on the board, which has been the order of things since the establishment of the board. He has also stated that decentralization of management of cricket and enhancing the representation and involvement of the districts will be important areas of focus in a second term.

“On the field, there’s a technique,” Aminul quipped, using a cricketing metaphor. “You can’t bowl more than one or two bouncers in an over. You can’t bowl a no-ball. Here, there were plenty of no-balls.”

Regardless of the controversies, the BCB Election is a pivotal point in the history of Bangladesh cricket that challenged the transparency and independence of one of the most influential sporting institutions in the country.

Amit Mishra’s Take:

The BCB Election has emerged as an administrative issue, but a bigger one: how will Bangladeshi cricket resolve the problem of power, fairness, and transparency? Aminul Islam has been very resistant to outside government intervention, though this is to protect the board and its autonomy. The cracks in the governance are evident in the sense that there has never been a law-free situation, and the players have expressed their grievances. His necessity to do something in the constitution may satisfy a few, yet this raises more questions of faith and change. This eventually demands open and rule-based leadership to be built, only through such leadership that Bangladesh cricket can become a global brand. Whether Aminul’s vision is providing integrity or starting another debate and thus marks the next phase in the BCB Election, is to be seen.
