Australian all-rounder Maitlan Brown played a vital role by scoring 62 runs and taking three wickets. Surrey successfully chased down a target of 247 runs and finished on 250 for 7 with four overs remaining. This result gave Lancashire their third consecutive defeat in the tournament.

Surrey Women Secure Important Victory at the Kia Oval

Surrey won the toss and chose to bowl first. Lancashire set a target of 246 for 9 in their 50 overs. Kira Chathli returned to the captaincy after missing the previous game and delivered a match-winning performance. Consequently, Surrey moved into a strong position in the tournament standings.

The home side began their run chase with great energy. They passed 50 runs in just the seventh over as Sophia Dunkley and Alice Monaghan found the boundary regularly. Dunkley scored a quick 30 from 23 balls before she was caught behind. Meanwhile, Monaghan added 26 runs before being bowled by Grace Johnson.

Surrey faced a difficult moment when they lost three wickets in just 14 balls. Grace Potts removed both Dunkley and Paige Scholfield, which left the home team needing a reset. Alice Davidson-Richards helped keep the scoreboard moving with a brisk 23. However, when she was clean bowled by Kate Cross, Surrey had slipped to 92 for 4.

At this critical point, Kira Chathli and Maitlan Brown joined forces for the fifth wicket. They added a massive 134 runs together from 154 deliveries. Chathli worked the ball around the field and pounced on loose balls to reach her half-century in 63 balls. Brown was slightly slower, reaching her own 50 runs from 68 deliveries.

Brown eventually fell for 62 when she hit a return catch to Fi Morris. Despite losing two more late wickets, Chathli remained calm. She finished the game by hitting Kate Cross over midwicket for four to secure the win. Specifically, Chathli’s 88 not out is her highest ever score in List A cricket.

Lancashire Batting Struggles Against Surrey Bowlers

Earlier in the day, Maitlan Brown bowled Lancashire’s Seren Smale for a duck in only the second over. Eve Jones and captain Ellie Threlkeld then tried to rebuild the innings with a 51-run partnership. Threlkeld scored 20 before she hit a long hop from Priyanaz Chatterji straight to point.

Danielle Gregory then caused serious problems for the Lancashire middle order. She bowled Maddie Penna for zero and had Fi Morris stumped by Chathli for 11. Eve Jones reached 69 runs, her third 50 of the tournament, but she was eventually caught by Paige Scholfield.

Grace Johnson showed spirit by scoring 39 from 56 balls. However, her innings ended when Scholfield took a spectacular one-handed catch at midwicket. Late runs from Ailsa Lister (29) and Kate Cross (25) helped Lancashire get close to 250. Despite these efforts and 21 wides from Surrey, Lancashire finished nine runs short of that milestone.

When asked about her time with the team, she revealed she got a bit emotional expressing her gratitude.
