Kyle Abbott Takes Four Wickets as Hampshire Bowl Yorkshire Out for 173

Hampshire vs Yorkshire

Kyle Abbott produced a disciplined spell of fast bowling to help Hampshire dismiss Yorkshire for 173 on the opening day of their County Championship Division One match at the Utilita Bowl.

Abbott finished with figures of 4 for 17 from 18 overs, which combined wickets with tight, economical bowling throughout his spell.

The South African seamer, who became a father for the second time last week, set the tone early by removing William Luxton lbw and getting the edge of Sam Whiteman’s bat. His opening burst read nine overs, seven maidens, and 2 for 3, and put immediate pressure on the Yorkshire batting order.

Andrew Neal supported him well, claiming his first three Championship wickets, while Eddie Jack picked up two more as Yorkshire’s innings fell apart on a used pitch at Southampton.

Abbott And Neal Combine To Dismantle Yorkshire Top Order

Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat first on a surface expected to assist spin bowlers later in the match. That decision backfired quickly once Abbott got going. He struck with the very first ball of the day, and appealed successfully for leg-before against Adam Lyth’s opening partner before going on to remove Luxton and Whiteman inside his opening spell. The wicket of Whiteman took Abbott to 50 career wickets against Yorkshire. It is a tally that includes a ten-wicket haul in the reverse fixture earlier this year in April.

Jack then struck with his fourth delivery and dismissed Lyth after setting him up with a sequence of deliveries moving away before bringing one back into the left-hander. Matthew Revis and James Wharton put together a stand of 55 runs to steady the innings, but both fell shortly after, with Revis and Jonny Bairstow dismissed lbw as Abbott continued to trouble the batters.

Neal’s Spin Proves Decisive In Middle Order Collapse

Playing only his second Championship match, Neal stepped in as a replacement for the retired Liam Dawson and made an immediate impact. His subtle variations accounted for Wharton, who edged behind, and George Hill, who was caught and bowled. Debutant Jafer Chohan also fell to Neal, lbw to a delivery that kept low off the surface.

Ben Coad was caught behind off Jack’s bowling, but Yorkshire’s last pair delayed the innings further. Dom Bess added 53 runs with Ben Cliff for the final wicket, and eventually finished unbeaten on 40 after reaching the boundary with a scoop shot. Sonny Baker ended the innings with a short delivery that accounted for Cliff.

Hill Strikes Back As Hampshire Lose Early Wickets

Hampshire closed the day on 60 for 4, still 113 runs behind. George Hill hit back for Yorkshire with impressive figures of 3 for 4 from eight overs, which ensured the contest remained finely poised heading into day two. The result of this match could carry significant weight in the battle against relegation, with Hampshire currently 17 points behind Yorkshire in the standings.

Hampshire’s reply began steadily before Coad removed Ali Orr after ten overs. Hill then took over and sent down four maiden overs in his opening spell of eight. He bowled Toby Albert with a delivery that angled into off stump, then added the wickets of Jake Lehmann and Baker, both trapped lbw, to leave Hampshire under pressure at the close of play.
