Australian Open Drops Mixed Format Golf After Backlash

After getting mixed reactions from players, Golf Australia has opted to end the joint format for the Australian Open that included both men and women.

This change will affect how national Opens are organized in the future. What does this mean for Australian golf going forward? Let’s take a look.

History of Mixed Format

Mixed-format golf features men and women competing in the same tournaments. It has roots in early Olympic golf and pro-am events but has recently become more organized.

Current examples are the Scandinavian Mixed, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Ladies European Tour, and the Troon Golf Mixed Championship, which have effectively included both genders in professional competition.

The introduction of the mixed format to the Australian Open in 2022 marked a revolution in Australian golf. This mixed format created an opportunity for both men and women to compete on equal footing, something entirely in line with global efforts for gender equality in sports.

Golf Australia introduced the mixed format for the Australian Open in 2022 to revitalize the tournament after the COVID-19 shutdown, hosting both men’s and women’s national Opens simultaneously with equal prize money.

Despite record crowds and ratings, Golf Australia dumped the mixed format for 2025 to preserve competition integrity and the prestige of the tournament. Changes in course conditions, such as softer greens and more lenient pin placements, were seen to water down the competitiveness of the event.

Player Criticism

Golf Australia, especially the Australian Open, has been criticized for the mixed-format tournaments by the players. Key players have identified problems in the condition of the course and the arrangement of events:

  • Cameron Smith supported his objection on grounds of course conditions softened that compromise the competitive integrity.
  • Hannah Green said the pin placements were awfully “generous” to her taste in an attempt to lessen the players’ degree of difficulty.
  • Adam Scott, too, opted not to play the 2024 edition out of misgivings about the new mixed format diminishing tournament prestige.

The cancellation of a mixed format could lead to more competitive events, with each tournament focusing on its own field of players.

The future of mixed-gender events in Australian golf may involve smaller, standalone tournaments or experimental formats, but for now, the focus will be on individual tournaments for each gender.

Golf Australia’s Decision

Golf Australia’s decision to cancel the mixed-format Australian Open was driven by feedback from top players and concerns about the tournament’s integrity.

The players felt that the easing of course conditions made the tournament less competitive and that the concessions given to both sexes weakened it. Some went as far as to say that the “generous” pin placements made life a little too easy for the elite.

Many top players have criticized the mixed format, raising concerns about its fairness and the event’s reputation, even though attendance and viewership were high.

Starting in 2025, the men’s and women’s tournaments will be held as separate events again. This update is included in Golf Australia’s long-term approach to increase the visibility of both tournaments while keeping up with the changing world of golf.

Future Tournament Plans

Golf Australia plans to focus on enhancing the profile of both the men’s and women’s tournaments individually after separating them in 2025. Plans include:

  • Increased flexibility: It can be used more effectively to ensure that these world events keep moving with changes from around the golfing world and remain relevant to competition.
  • Enhanced Profile: Focus on growing the individual profiles of both men’s and women’s tournaments.
  • Tournament Awareness: Continue engaging crowds and broadcasters to positively impact the overall visibility of Australian Golf.
  • Rescheduling Women’s Open: Doing it earlier in the year – possibly before any major LPGA events start.
  • Co-Sanctioning Agreements: Reconsider or extend co-sanctioning agreements for the men’s and women’s championships to make both events reach more audiences and become more competitive.

This will add to tournament awareness, continuing engagement with crowds and broadcasts in a positive tone on behalf of promoting Australian golf in general.
