Alan Coleman will step down as the Director of Cricket for Middlesex County Cricket Club at the end of the 2026 season. He informed the club of his decision in September 2026, ending his five-year tenure in the role.
The departure coincides with the exit of Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy, who will also leave Lord’s at the end of the year to pursue international selection with South Africa. Coleman will remain in his position until at least the end of 2026 to manage the transition and launch the club’s winter training programme.
What Coleman Did For Middlesex County Club
Coleman took over the Director of Cricket role at the end of 2021. He succeeded Head Coach Stuart Law, who left the club at that time. Before this promotion, Coleman served Middlesex as both Assistant Coach and Academy Director.
During his five years, Coleman managed both the men’s and women’s senior cricket programmes at the club. In 2022, Middlesex Men won promotion to Division One of the County Championship under his supervision.
Coleman also guided the development of the women’s game during a period of major domestic restructure. He oversaw the establishment of Middlesex Women as a Tier Two side. The team achieved immediate success by winning the Vitality Blast in 2025. Under his wider oversight, the regional Sunrisers team also won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2024.

Colemanβs Achievements With the Club
Middlesex Men reColeman led Middlesex Men into the List A knockout stages for the first time since 2019 back in 2015. The team built on this success during the 2026 season. Under Coleman’s direction, the men’s team reached their first List A final since 1990.
The women’s senior team also performed strongly in 2026. Middlesex Women reached the semi-final stage of their competition. Coleman noted that these achievements came during a highly challenging period for the club off the pitch.
In his official statement, Coleman expressed his pride in leading the club he supported as a child. Coleman stated: “I’ve been extremely proud to lead the cricket at the club I’ve supported since I was a child.”

Whatβs Next For Alan Coleman

Julie Harrington, interim chief executive officer of Middlesex, thanked Coleman for his work and dedication. βColemanβs success says a lot about his commitment,β said Harrington, a recent addition to the club.
Harrington said: “Although I have only been at Middlesex for a short period of time, it has been very clear how dedicated Alan has been in the role, and the Club’s successes are a testament to his hard work.”
Harrington appreciated Coleman’s early announcement, which allows the club to plan for the future. The Middlesex board has already started the recruitment process to find a new Director of Cricket. Harrington confirmed that the club will build on Coleman’s philosophy of winning matches with homegrown players.
Coleman will continue his duties through the autumn. He will guide the squad into their winter training schedules and help the new Director of Cricket settle into the club.
