Joburg Super Kings have named Albie Morkel as their new head coach for SA20 2027. The former South Africa allrounder replaces Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the role earlier this month. Morkel takes charge as the franchise prepares for its fifth season in the tournament.
Morkel’s Journey From Player to Head Coach
Morkel has been associated with Joburg Super Kings since the franchise began. He played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, a link that carries directly into his new role at JSK, a sister franchise under the same ownership group. Over the past few seasons, he has worked closely with the squad and played a key part in developing young talent, including wicketkeeper-batter Donovan Ferreira. Earlier this year, he also served as South Africa’s T20 consultant during the T20 World Cup, adding international experience to his coaching background.
In a statement released by the franchise, Morkel called the appointment a proud moment in his career. He said his path from playing for the Super Kings to now leading one of its franchises as head coach felt deeply personal, and that he was eager to build on the foundations already in place at JSK.
JSK’s Performance in Previous SA20 Seasons
Joburg Super Kings have reached the semi-finals twice since SA20 began, doing so in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Their campaigns in 2025 and 2026 ended earlier than hoped, with the side falling in the Eliminator on both occasions. The franchise will be looking to Morkel to push the team past that stage and back into title contention when the new season begins.

Franchise director Kasi Viswanathan backed the appointment, pointing to Morkel’s dual experience with the team as both a player and a coach. He said Morkel’s understanding of the franchise’s culture, combined with his knowledge of South African cricket, gives the management group confidence heading into the new campaign.
Fleming had steered JSK through its early seasons before he chose to leave the role of head coach this month. The vacancy created by him paved the way for Morkel, who was part of the system already and aware of how the team functioned.

SA20 2027 Schedule and JSK’s Opening Fixture
The fifth edition of SA20 is scheduled to kick off on January 17, 2027. Joburg Super Kings are scheduled to take to the field in their opening game the very next day against Paarl Royals. This match is going to be the beginning of an exciting new journey for Morkel’s team after two back-to-back Eliminator exits.
With preparations for the coming season well on track, it will be interesting to see how JSK sets up their team and coaching staff around Morkel. With his knowledge of the players and the experience he gained from coaching in the international arena, Morkel positions himself to manage the transition without major disruption to the franchise’s existing setup. The upcoming months will show how the team shapes its roster and strategy before the tournament gets underway in January.
