Bjorn Fortuin will captain a young South Africa side on an upcoming multi-format tour of Namibia, marking a fresh chapter in the Proteas’ white-ball leadership plans. The tour begins with a tri-series involving Namibia and Zimbabwe on August 28 in Windhoek, followed by a three-match ODI series against the hosts.
South Africa named Fortuin as skipper for both legs of the trip, handing several uncapped and fringe players a chance to stake their claim ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle, which South Africa will co-host alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Fortuin Named Captain for Namibia Series
Fortuin takes charge of a squad built around opportunity rather than experience. Cricket South Africa named 15 players for the trip, including Eathan Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann, Rubin Hermann, Duan Jansen, Kwena Maphaka, Nqobani Mokoena, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lutho Sipamla, Jason Smith, and Prenelan Subrayen.
Head coach Shukri Conrad said the squad was built to cover both formats efficiently, and that the tour gives players a genuine chance to add to their international caps. He pointed to Fortuin’s leadership record with the Lions as the reason behind his elevation, calling him an experienced player the team trusts to guide the group.
New Faces Given International Chance
Duan Jansen headlines the uncapped names in the squad. The all-rounder, twin brother of Proteas star Marco Jansen, earned his maiden call-up after a strong run on the domestic circuit, where he played a central role in the Titans’ title-winning campaign in the 50-over competition. Conrad described him as a quality all-rounder who has shown real character for his franchise.
Eathan Bosch is the other uncapped player included for the T20I leg. Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann and Nqobani Mokoena all receive their first ODI call-ups, while Jordan is joined in the squad by his brother, Rubin Hermann.
Conrad referenced the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year, noting that Esterhuizen and Mokoena showed promise during that series, and that Hermann’s opportunity was cut short by an injury in the opening match. He said the coaching staff is keen to see Hermann get another chance at this level.
Tri-Series and ODI Schedule Confirmed
The T20I tri-series runs from August 28 to September 6, with all matches hosted at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. South Africa opens the tournament against Namibia on August 28, before facing Zimbabwe a day later. Namibia and Zimbabwe meet twice more during the group stage, on August 31 and September 3, while South Africa returns to face Zimbabwe on September 1 and Namibia again on September 4.
The tournament concludes with a final on September 6, with the two qualifying sides still to be determined. All group and final matches are scheduled for a 2 PM local start. The tour then shifts to the 50-over format, with South Africa and Namibia playing three ODIs on September 9, 11 and 13, each starting at 9:30 AM local time, also at the Namibia Cricket Ground.
The tour offers South Africa a low-pressure setting to test squad depth ahead of the 2027 World Cup, while giving Fortuin his first extended run as captain across two formats in a single trip.
