Most Successful Teams in BPL History
Comilla Victorians remain the benchmark in BPL success. Fortune Barishal made a name for themselves recently by winning two titles in a row. The Dhaka franchises, on the other hand, have won three titles under different names.
Comilla Victorians: 4 Titles
Comilla won their first trophy in 2015, chasing 157 against Barisal Bulls on the last ball. That dramatic finish set the tone for what would become the most successful franchise run in BPL history. They added another in 2018-19, then defended successfully in 2021-22 with a one-run win over Fortune Barishal. That match stands as one of the tightest finals the tournament has produced. Their fourth came in 2023 under captain Imrul Kayes, cementing their position at the top.
Fortune Barishal: 2 Titles
Tamim Iqbal captained Fortune Barishal to their first championship in 2024, beating three-time winners Comilla Victorians. The team came back stronger in 2025, defending 195 against Chittagong Kings with just three balls to spare. Kyle Mayers hit 46 in the 2024 final and played a similar role in 2025. Both titles came with high-pressure chases that could have gone either way.
Dhaka Franchises: 3 Combined Titles
The Dhaka-based teams won three titles across different identities. Dhaka Gladiators grabbed the first two BPL championships in 2012 and 2013. The franchise later rebranded to Dhaka Dynamites and picked up the 2016 title. Shakib Al Hasan won Player of the Tournament in both 2012 and 2013 while representing the Gladiators.
Single Title Winners
Rajshahi Warriors claimed their first BPL trophy in 2026. Tanzid Hasan Tamim took Player of the Match honors after Rajshahi posted 174 and bowled out Chattogram for 111.
Rajshahi Royals won during the 2019-20 season. Andre Russell grabbed Player of the Tournament after dominating with both bat and ball.
Rangpur Riders took the 2017 title with the highest successful total in a BPL final at 206 runs. Chris Gayle earned Player of the Tournament for his explosive batting throughout that season.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim took Player of the Match, while Shoriful Islam won Player of the Tournament with 26 wickets across the season.
Tournament Format and Structure Changes
The BPL has gone through several format changes since it started. The league has adapted its structure multiple times to keep things competitive and engaging for both players and fans.
The tournament initially used an auction system for player selection in 2012 and 2013. From 2015 onwards, organizers switched to a draft system that stayed in place until 2025. The 2026 season brought back the auction format under new organizer IMG, which took over from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The number of participating teams has varied as well. The league started with six franchises in 2012, expanded to seven teams in 2013, and has moved between six and seven teams in different seasons. The 2026 edition featured six teams: Rajshahi Warriors, Chattogram Royals, Dhaka Capitals, Rangpur Riders, Sylhet Titans, and Noakhali Express.
All BPL finals have been played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. The venue has hosted every championship match since the tournament began.
BPL All-Time Records
Tamim Iqbal has the most runs in BPL history, with 3,835 runs over all seasons. He was known as one of the best batsmen in the tournament because he always played well.
Shakib Al Hasan has the most wickets in BPL history, with 149. Shakib has also won the Player of the Tournament award four times, which is more than any other player.
Shoriful Islam took 26 wickets in the 2026 season to win Player of the Tournament. His performance set a high standard for bowlers in a single season.
Cancelled Seasons: 2014 and 2020-21
Two BPL seasons never happened. The league faced disruptions that forced the Bangladesh Cricket Board to cancel entire editions rather than run compromised tournaments.
The 2014 edition was cancelled because of severe political unrest in Bangladesh. Protests and civil disturbances made it impossible to conduct the tournament safely. The Bangladesh Cricket Board postponed the season indefinitely, and the league resumed in 2015.
The 2020-21 season got scrapped because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Global restrictions on international travel and public gatherings prevented foreign players from participating. The BCB chose to skip the season entirely rather than run a tournament without full international representation. The league returned for the 2021-22 season with proper health protocols in place.
