The England and Wales Cricket Board has sacked Brendon McCullum as head coach of the men’s Test team. He keeps his role with England’s white-ball sides. The move leaves the Test team without a captain or a coach at the same time, coming just months after the board publicly backed McCullum to continue despite a 4-1Ashes loss to Australia last winter.
McCullum called himself “gutted” about losing a job he said he had loved. He added that his focus now shifts fully to the white-ball teams and that he wants nothing but success for the Test side going forward. ECB chief executive Richard Gould said in March that sacking McCullum would have been the easy route, and that the coach could learn from the Ashes defeat. Three Tests later, following a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand, the board reversed course. Gould said the timing suited England’s push for the Ashes next year.
Record And Reasoning Behind The Decision
McCullum took over the Test job in 2022. He and captain Ben Stokes built an aggressive style that brought ten wins from his first eleven matches in charge. Results dropped off after that early stretch. He leaves without a series win against Australia or India. His overall record reads 27 wins, two draws and 20 defeats, with seven of those losses arriving in England’s last nine Tests.
His tenure opened and closed with home series against New Zealand, his own country. England won 3-0 in 2022. This year’s series ended in defeat and was followed by Stokes’ abrupt retirement from the format.
McCullum said after the loss at Trent Bridge that his commitment to English cricket had not wavered, and he expected to continue in the role. The ECB informed him on Saturday morning, hours before England’s fifth T20I against India in Southampton, that he would leave the Test post.
Search For A Successor Begins
Rob Key, England’s managing director, extended McCullum’s brief to white-ball cricket two years ago when his contract ran to the end of 2027. McCullum still has more than a year left on that deal and will stay in charge of the white-ball teams through next year’s 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
The ECB will now start searching for a Test coach, returning to the split coaching setup England used between 2022 and 2024 under white-ball coach Matthew Mott. Names under consideration reportedly include Andrew Flintoff, Richard Dawson, Ryan Campbell, and Justin Langer.
Andy Flower, who coached England through three Ashes wins, may also draw interest, though his current role with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL could complicate any approach.

Captaincy Question Adds To Rebuild
Key said working with McCullum had been a privilege and that the Test team remains well positioned despite recent results. Harry Brook stands as the leading candidate to replace Stokes as captain, but the board must decide whether he should lead across all three formats.
McCullum’s white-ball side beat India 4-0 in the T20I series over the weekend, a result that pushed England to the top of the ICC’s T20I rankings.
