Delhi Capitals are set to bring in Chaminda Vaas and Amit Mishra as bowling coaches for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The pair will work under Sourav Ganguly, who takes over as head coach, with Yuvraj Singh serving as assistant coach.
Vaas’s Coaching Background Ahead of IPL Role
Vaas, Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowler with 355 Test wickets and 400 in ODIs, played for Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010 but has spent most of his post-playing career on international assignments rather than in franchise dugouts.
He coached Sri Lanka across three stints: 2012 to 2015, 2016 to 2017, and a brief return in 2021 that ended within two days over a pay dispute. He took charge again in 2022. His coaching path began as a consultant with New Zealand, and he later worked with Ireland during the 2016 World T20. Vaas has also spent years with Sri Lanka Cricket as a fast-bowling consultant, and mentored young pace bowlers at the academy level.
On the franchise circuit, he coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and led Kandy Royals during LPL 2026. This will mark his first time coaching in the IPL. Vaas and Mishra have already begun working with Delhi Capitals’ academy players, though the franchise has not yet confirmed any of the appointments, including those of Ganguly and Yuvraj.
Mishra steps into coaching after a long IPL playing career
Mishra is also entering IPL coaching for the first time. The legspinner played for four franchises across his career: Delhi Daredevils (later renamed Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants. He featured in every edition of the tournament from 2008 to 2024, barring 2022, before retiring last September following his final appearance for LSG.
Mishraβs IPL debut in 2008 remains one of the tournament’s standout individual performances: a five-wicket haul that included the first of his three hat-tricks, which is still the most by any bowler in IPL history.
Mishra finished his playing days tenth on the competition’s all-time wicket-takers list, with 174 scalps from 162 matches at an economy rate of 7.37. His bowling was built largely on slow, loopy leg breaks that troubled batters across formats.

Coaching reshuffle tied to Delhi Capitals’ ownership arrangement

The changes at Delhi Capitals stem from an agreement between the franchise’s co-owners, GMR Sports India and JSW Sports, reached after the 2024 season. Under that arrangement, each owner controls team operations in alternating two-year cycles.
GMR’s stint saw former India batter Venugopal Rao appointed director of cricket, with Hemang Badani as head coach and Munaf Patel as bowling coach through the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The upcoming shift to JSW’s cycle brings Ganguly, Yuvraj, Vaas, and Mishra into their new roles ahead of the 2027 season, establishing a significant overhaul of the franchise’s cricket department.
