Warwickshire pacers Ethan Bamber and Chris Woakes put their team in firm control of the County Championship Division One title race at Edgbaston on 24 September 2026. Warwickshire dismissed Leicestershire for just 125 runs in 47 overs before reaching 130 for four at stumps on day one of the 66th match.
Warwickshire now hold a five-run lead with six wickets in hand, tightening their grip on a potential ninth title in club history. Bamber took four wickets for 42 runs, while Woakes took three wickets for 20 runs.
Early Wickets and Milestone Breakthroughs
Leicestershire captain Ian Holland won the toss and chose to bat. However, the Warwickshire bowling attack dominated from the opening over. Bamber struck on his fourth delivery, bowling Sheridon Gumbs for a duck. The wicket marked Bamber’s 300th first-class dismissal.
Woakes struck at the end of the second over from the City End. He trapped Rishi Patel leg-before-wicket for zero to earn his 650th red-ball career dismissal. Woakes then removed Stevie Eskinazi for 8 runs. This marked Woakes’ 651st red-ball wicket.
Oliver Hannon-Dalby ended Jonny Tattersall’s 32-ball stay by removing him for six runs. On the very next ball, Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard dismissed Sol Budinger for 27 runs. Budinger hit three boundaries during his 27-run knock before his departure from the crease.
Ben Cox scored 33 runs, striking three boundaries off Bamber and sweeping spinner Manav Suthar. Cox’s departure left Leicestershire struggling at 99 for eight. Bamber and Barnard quickly bowled out the remaining lower-order batters to close the innings in 47 overs.
Bamber took 4 wickets for 42 from 11 overs. This haul moved him to 64 Division One wickets for the season, drawing him level with Kyle Abbott at the top of the league wicket-taking charts. Bamber has taken 19 of those wickets during September alone. Woakes took 3 wickets for 20 from nine overs.
