Type of Dismissals In Cricket

Getting out in cricket is never a good feeling, but how many of the readers know about different types of dismissals in cricket? How aware are you that if you appear late into the batting crease, you will be dismissed?

There are a total of 10 types of dismissals in cricket that readers might not be aware of at all. Let’s learn about these dismissals in the article. Stick with us right till the very end.

Bowled Out

The most common type of dismissal in cricket is bowled out. When the ball hits the stumps, and the bails come off, it is called bowled in cricket.

It is important to notice that the ball should hit the stumps, and the bails should fall down. It doesn’t matter whether the stumps are directly hit or the ball ricochets onto the stumps.

Caught Out

It is a form of dismissal when the batter hits the ball, it goes in the air, and the fielder holds onto it. The catches could either be the fielder, the bowler, or the wicketkeeper. A batter needs to be caught before the ball touches the ground in any shape or form.

Hit wicket

One of the unluckiest dismissals in cricket is the hit wicket. If a batter knocks the stumps out with either his bat, pad, or any body part during the game, the batter is termed to be hit wicket.

Even if the ball tends to hit the helmet and the helmet falls to dislodge the bail, it is also called a hit wicket. Although it is a very rare type of dismissal, it usually happens in aggressive style batting using unorthodox techniques.

Leg Before Wicket (LBW)

When the batter hits the ball with their leg or pad when it is in line to hit the stumps, the batter will be adjudged LBW or leg before the wicket. It is one of the complicated types of dismissal based on technical aspects.

The sole decision of whether or not the batsman is out depends majorly on the umpire. The ball should be pitching in line, and the impact should be in line, and should either be hitting or the umpires call on the stumps.

Nowadays, technologies like Hawk-Eye and the Decision Review System (DRS) make it easy to spot an LBW.

Hitting the ball twice

Not a lot of the readers might be aware of this form of dismissal, but you can’t hit the ball twice. Rather, you will be declared out.

It doesn’t matter whether you hit the ball twice knowingly or unknowingly. You will be termed out. A batter who tends to hit the ball twice, even with his body, is adjudged to be out.

Run Out

A very common form of dismissal is run out. When the batsman is not able to make his way into the crease before the ball hits the stumps, he is termed out to be run.

Most of the time, the runout decision is easy, but if it is tight, the third umpire will be called in to decide out or not out.

Obstructing the Field

A form of dismissal when the batsman is willingly obstructing the field or distracting the field. In the last 5 years, this type of dismissal has been very common.

The rule of obstructing the field falls under Law 37 of MCC. Not only stopping the ball from hitting the stumps but also distracting the fielder with your sled can cause you to be declared out, too.

Furthermore, if a batsman tries to stop the ball with their hand to stop it from hitting the stumps, also known as ‘handled the ball,’ it is also another dismissal, which now falls under the same subset of obstructing the field is also deemed out.

Stumped

In the list of types of dismissals in cricket, stumping is another prevalent type of dismissals. When a batter leaves his crease in an attempt to make runs and misses the ball, the wicketkeeper has a chance to whip the bails.

If the batter is not on the crease, he will be adjudged stumped. Most of the time, the batter is stumped off the spinner as they move slightly to hit the ball; this type of dismissal is very common in limited-over cricket.

Timed Out

There is a specific time for one batsman to leave the field after getting out and another batter to come in and take the strike. The incoming batter can’t take more than 3 minutes to come and play the first ball.

Angelo Mathews has been dismissed in this rare way. An incoming batter must be ready to face the first ball in 3 minutes when the fielding time is up and ready. Such peculiar rules for international batters.

Retired Out

Any batter who leaves the playing ground without informing the umpires of the proper reason why he has left the field, the batter will be adjudged retired.

If the batter is injured during the field of play, he can inform the umpire and retire. But when all the wickets are down, he can come forward and bat again.

Mankad Out

An unusual name, one might think, this dismissal in cricket is named after Indian player Vinoo Mankad and is considered one of the most controversial dismissals.

If a non-striker moves from their crease, in the event the ball is yet to be bowled, the bowler can dislodge the bails from stumps, leading to Mankad Out.
