6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History?

Only two bowlers in the history of cricket have been officially confirmed to have taken six wickets in six balls in a row. On January 21, 2017, Aled Carey did it for the Golden Point Cricket Club in Australia. On November 11, 2023, Gareth Morgan did it again for the Mudgeeraba Nerang Districts Cricket Club.

Guinness World Records has confirmed that these are the only known cases of a bowler getting a batter out with every delivery in a six-ball over in Australian club cricket.

This article discusses the confirmed records, the reported but unconfirmed cases, and why this achievement is still not recognized in international cricket. The full breakdown includes details on the match, bowling figures, and the exact reasons for each performance.

What Does Six Wickets in Six Balls Mean?

In cricket, a standard over has six legal deliveries. The bowler got rid of a batter on every single delivery, either by catching them, bowling them out, getting them out LBW, or running them out.

No bowler has ever done this in Test cricket, ODIs, or T20 Internationals. The record only applies to clubs and youth teams. Neil Wagner (Otago, 2011), Al-Amin Hossain (Bangladesh Cricket Board XI, 2013), and Abhimanyu Mithun (Karnataka, 2019) all got five wickets in one over, which is the most in professional cricket.

Skill and pressure make it rare. Professional batters take great care of their wickets, umpires carefully look at LBW appeals, and field placements change after each dismissal. Batters have their rare moments, like hitting six sixes in an over, but the bowling equivalent is even harder to find at the highest level.

Has Anyone Taken 6 Wickets in 6 Balls in International Cricket?

Nope. Not once in men’s or women’s international matches. Lasith Malinga came closest in the 2007 World Cup with four wickets in four balls against South Africa. That’s still the record for an international over. Wasim Akram and Rashid Khan have taken famous hat-tricks, but nobody’s gone past four straight dismissals.

The gap between international cricket and club cricket explains why. Top batters train for years and handle pressure like it’s nothing. At the club level, panic spreads fast. One wicket turns into two, then three, and before you know it, the whole batting order’s back in the pavilion.

Aled Carey (Golden Point Cricket Club, Australia)

Aled Carey
6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 8
  • When: 21 January 2017
  • Where: Ballarat, Victoria
  • Match: Ballarat Cricket Association Fourth Team
  • Opposition: East Ballarat Cricket Club

Carey became the first bowler to get official Guinness World Records verification. He was bowling his ninth over with East Ballarat at 40 for 2. They were fielding just nine players that day.

How the wickets fell:

  • Ball 1: Caught in slips
  • Ball 2: Caught behind
  • Ball 3: LBW
  • Ball 4: Bowled
  • Ball 5: Bowled
  • Ball 6: Bowled

He finished with 6 for 20 from nine overs. The club scorebook official wrote “Perfect” next to the entry. They kept the match ball and put it on display.

Carey told reporters he just bowled his normal line and length. He thanked the fielders for their catches and said he couldn’t believe what was happening as it was happening.

Gareth Morgan (Mudgeeraba Nerang Districts Cricket Club, Australia)

Gareth Morgan
6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 9
  • When: 11 November 2023
  • Where: Carrara, Queensland
  • Match: Premier League Division 3
  • Opposition: Surfers Paradise Cricket Club

Morgan’s performance might be the most dramatic cricket comeback ever recorded. His team was defending 179 runs in a 40-over match. Surfers Paradise walked into the final over at 174 for 4. They needed five runs with six wickets left. Game over, right?

Wrong.

Morgan, who almost never bowled death overs, took the ball for those last six deliveries.

How the wickets fell:

  • Ball 1: Caught
  • Ball 2: Caught
  • Ball 3: Caught
  • Ball 4: Caught
  • Ball 5: Bowled
  • Ball 6: Bowled

Surfers Paradise went from 174 for 4 to 174 all out in one over. Mudgeeraba won by four runs.

Morgan finished with 7 for 16 from seven overs. He’d already dismissed opener Jake Garland earlier (who’d scored 65). Morgan also top-scored for his team with 39 runs from 39 balls. He got his first career hat-trick during those six balls. The final wicket was the opposition captain. Five batters got golden ducks in that over.

The Guardian reported teammates ran onto the field “like shocked commuters” after each wicket. Social media went nuts comparing it to Carey’s 2017 performance. Morgan kept the ball, and the club mounted it for display.

Harshit Seth (Dubai Cricket Council Starlets, UAE)

6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 10
  • When: 28 November 2021
  • Where: Dubai
  • Age: 16 years old
  • Match: Karwan Global T20 League
  • Opposition: Hyderabad Hawks Academy RCG

The left-arm spinner tore through Hyderabad Hawks Academy. Six straight dismissals led to match figures of 8 wickets total. The opposition got bowled out for just 44 runs.

How the wickets fell (per Gulf News):

  • 4 bowled
  • 3 LBW
  • 1 caught

Seth told reporters afterwards he stuck to line and length instead of trying fancy variations. His discipline at 16 impressed everyone watching. Guinness hasn’t verified this one, but Gulf News and UAE cricket authorities documented it properly.

Matt Rowe (Palmerston North Boys’ High School, New Zealand)

Matt Rowe
6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 11
  • When: March 2023
  • Where: New Zealand
  • Age: 17 years old
  • Match: Super Eight Secondary Schools Tournament
  • Opposition: Rotorua Boys’ High School

Rowe’s six straight dismissals came during an absolute masterclass. He finished with 9 for 12 from six overs, including one maiden. Rotorua’s batting lineup got demolished.

His coach told New Zealand media that Rowe focused on accuracy over pace. He used subtle length changes to deceive batters instead of trying to bowl fast. Pretty mature thinking for a 17-year-old.

The Super Eight regularly produces future first-class and international cricketers, so this wasn’t some random weekend match. Tournament officials documented everything with full scorecards.

Oliver Whitehouse (Bromsgrove Cricket Club, England)

Oliver Whitehouse
6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 12
  • When: June 2023
  • Where: Bromsgrove, England
  • Age: 12 years old
  • Match: Under 13 Club Cricket
  • Opposition: Cookhill

Playing for Bromsgrove’s under-13 team, Whitehouse took eight wickets across two overs without giving up a single run. Six of those dismissals came on consecutive balls.

Reuters covered the story because Whitehouse’s grandmother is Ann Jones, the 1969 Wimbledon tennis champion. Seems like sporting talent runs in the family.

Bromsgrove officials said they’d never seen that kind of accuracy at the youth level. The performance prompted people to discuss how youth cricket development works in England.

Virandeep Singh (Malaysia XI) – The Disputed One

Virandeep Singh
6 Ball 6 Wicket Record List: Who Has Done It in Cricket History? 13
  • When: April 2022
  • Where: Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Match: Nepal Pro Club Championship
  • Opposition: Push Sports

This one causes arguments among cricket statisticians.

Singh was bowling the 20th over with Push Sports cruising at 131 for 3. They needed eight runs from 12 balls. Six wickets fell in that over.

Here’s the problem: one dismissal was a run-out. Singh personally got five batters out (including a hat-trick plus two more). But since he didn’t bowl all six wickets himself, Guinness won’t verify it.

Some people count it because the scorebook shows six wickets in the over. Others say the bowler must personally dismiss all six batters. Guinness sides with the second group. Run-outs don’t count toward the bowler’s achievement.

Women’s Cricket: Has a 6 Ball 6 Wicket Ever Happened?

Not yet. No official record exists in international women’s cricket.

Women’s cricket has seen plenty of great bowling. Multiple hat-tricks, devastating spells in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. But nobody’s reached six straight dismissals in one over.

Domestic tournaments in Australia, England, and India have had rare four-wicket and five-wicket overs. Shabnim Ismail’s pace, Ellyse Perry’s swing, and Sophie Ecclestone’s spin have all produced brilliant performances. The six-wicket over just hasn’t happened yet.

Could it happen soon? Maybe. Women’s cricket is growing fast. The WBBL, The Hundred, and WPL have raised standards across the board. More matches mean more chances for someone to pull it off. More girls playing cricket means deeper talent pools. It’s just a matter of time.

Why International Cricket Has Never Seen It

The gap between club cricket and international cricket explains why no professional bowler has joined this list. Lasith Malinga came closest during the 2007 Cricket World Cup when he took four wickets in four consecutive balls for Sri Lanka against South Africa. That performance remains the best in international cricket but falls two short of a full over.

International batters are too skilled and too cautious to allow such a collapse. At the Test and limited-overs levels, the level of skill, mental discipline, and awareness is so high that it’s almost impossible for one bowler to get six straight wickets. Just like Test cricket six-hitting records show consistent excellence over a career, the six-wicket over would require perfect play in just 30 seconds. International umpires also use stricter rules when deciding LBW, which makes it less likely that close calls will go in favor of the bowler.

Field placements change immediately after the first two wickets in any over. Captains adjust, batters communicate, and the pressure shifts to the bowler. At club level, panic sets in faster. Batters play reckless shots, fielders maintain aggressive positions, and the mental aspect of the game shifts dramatically within seconds.

The five-wicket over remains the professional benchmark. Neil Wagner’s 2011 performance for Otago, Al-Amin Hossain’s 2013 spell for Bangladesh Cricket Board XI, and Abhimanyu Mithun’s 2019 effort for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy all demonstrate how difficult it is to maintain wicket-taking momentum. Adding a sixth consecutive dismissal requires conditions, skill, fielding support, and batter errors to align perfectly.

  • Matt Rowe, Palmerston North Boys’ High School vs Rotorua Boys’ High School, March 2023, Super Eight secondary schools tournament, New Zealand. Match figures: 9/12 from 6 overs.

Shane Warne and the Six Wickets Myth

Shane Warne never took six wickets in six balls. The search terms “Shane Warne 6 ball 6 wicket” appear frequently online, but no evidence supports the claim. Warne’s 708 Test wickets and his 1994 hat-trick against England are well documented, but he never achieved a six-wicket over at any level of cricket.

Guinness World Records confirms that only Aled Carey and Gareth Morgan hold verified six-wicket overs. The professional cricket record for most wickets in one over remains five. No footage, scorecard, or match report exists showing Warne taking six consecutive wickets in a single over.

The confusion likely stems from Warne’s legendary status and fans’ tendency to attribute rare feats to famous players. His name continues to appear in searches related to this record, but the facts confirm it as a myth rather than a reality.

FAQs

1.Who has officially taken six wickets in six balls in cricket?

Two bowlers have been verified by Guinness World Records. Aled Carey did it for Golden Point Cricket Club in 2017, and Gareth Morgan achieved it for Mudgeeraba Nerang Districts Cricket Club in 2023. Both cases happened in Australian club cricket.

2.Has any international bowler taken six wickets in one over?

No international bowler has done it. The closest was Lasith Malinga, who took four wickets in four consecutive balls for Sri Lanka against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup. The professional record for most wickets in one over is five.

3.Are run-outs counted in the six wickets in six balls record?

Guinness World Records counts only overs where the bowler got all six dismissals himself. Virandeep Singh’s 2022 over had a run-out and is not officially verified.

4.What is the difference between a hat-trick and six wickets in six balls?

A hat-trick means three wickets in a row. Six wickets in six balls means the bowler got a wicket on every ball of a complete over. Some fans use the term double hat-trick, but that usually refers to four wickets in four balls.
