Aminul Islam Will Serve Four-Year Term as BCB President

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam has been re-elected after the board election on Monday. The move will see him serve through a full term of four years, after his interim tenure in the post for the past four months.

The day-long election saw Aminul Islam retain his leadership without contest. Former BCB President Faruque Ahmed and Shakhawat Hossain were also elected as vice-presidents, completing the board’s top administrative positions.

According to the BCB Election Commission, the election included both physical ballots and e-voting, ensuring participation from across the country. Out of 156 eligible councillors, 115 votes were cast, with 23 directors elected directly and two government-nominated members later completing the 25-member board.

How The Election Process Works

The BCB’s electoral system is divided into three categories of councillors who vote for 23 board directors.

  • Category 1: Includes directors from the country’s divisions and districts. Aminul Islam was one of the ten directors elected from this section.
  • Category 2: Represents the influential Dhaka clubs, which elect 12 directors.
  • Category 3: Includes representatives from institutions, former captains, and other cricketing organisations.

After the directors were announced at around 6:30 pm, they held an internal vote to select the BCB President and vice presidents. Aminul, Faruque, and Shakhawat were all elected unopposed to their respective posts.

Among the newly elected directors are three former national captains — Aminul Islam, Faruque Ahmed, and Khaled Mashud — symbolising a strong player presence in the board’s leadership.

Former Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who recently stepped down as a senior men’s selector, also joined the board unopposed as a director from the Khulna sub-category.

Controversies And Challenges Surrounding The Election

While Monday’s voting was largely smooth, the election commission later reported minor allegations of intimidation. The lead-up to the poll, however, was not free of disputes.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal had withdrawn from the race after raising concerns about alleged interference in the nomination process. His complaints followed a letter issued by BCB President Aminul Islam, seeking a review of nominations for the first category. The issue was eventually cleared by Bangladesh’s courts a day before the election.

Despite these controversies, the process concluded peacefully, paving the way for a new four-year chapter in Bangladesh’s cricket administration.

Aminul’s Vision For Bangladesh Cricket

After his confirmation, Aminul Islam said he wanted to continue the developmental journey he began earlier this year.

“I’ve fallen in love with the progress of Bangladesh cricket and want to take it further,” Aminul said after being re-elected. “This is not just an administrative role — it’s about ensuring the game continues to grow at every level.”

Aminul first took charge in May 2025 and described his short stint at the time as a “quick T20 innings.” His re-election now allows him to shape the grassroots development, player welfare, and governance transparency.

The board under his leadership is expected to work on domestic structure reform, better coordination with Dhaka clubs, and stronger performance management systems for the national team.

Bangladesh Cricket At A Crossroads

Aminul Islam, the captain of Bangladesh in their first World Cup appearance in 1999, has a difficult yet bright future as the President of BCB. Bangladesh cricket has demonstrated steady development in short-format cricket, but is still in need of stabilizing in Test cricket.

The following four years will be marked by the BCB sailing through some key landmark events such as the Champions Trophy 2026, the 2027 ODI World Cup, and massive domestic tournament improvements like the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

As a number of the former players involved in the decision-making, there is hope that Aminul Islam can bridge the gap between the board and players, enhancing transparency and long-term growth.

Amit Mishra’s Take:

The fact that Aminul Islam is re-elected as BCB President is like a vote of stability in the midst of a period when Bangladesh cricket needs guidance rather than disruption. His composed approach to leadership and strong attachment to the game are an assurance that the board will eventually concentrate on development rather than politics. The presence of more ex-players in the decision-making process may also assist in the elimination of the historical disconnect between the administrators and cricketers. The coming four years will see how Aminul can make his words come true – forging a more domestic base, developing young talent, and regaining confidence in the system. This will be an opportunity to proceed with a sense of purpose and togetherness in the case of Bangladesh cricket.
