Suryakumar Yadav‘s time as India’s T20I captain appears to be coming to an end. Sources told NDTV that BCCI selectors are most likely to remove him as skipper in the next few days, with his place in the team also up for discussion. The decision carries weight beyond a simple captaincy reshuffle — a T20 World Cup-winning captain being sacked just three months after winning the marquee event is a rarity in world cricket.
The BCCI selectors have decided to move in a different direction following the Mumbai batter’s prolonged dip in form, with discussions between the selection committee and head coach Gautam Gambhir already having taken place.
Form Collapse Forced BCCI’s Hand
The decision has not come out of nowhere. Despite the title win, Suryakumar endured a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign with the bat, scoring 242 runs in eight matches. A significant portion of those runs came in a single innings against the USA, where he made 84. But he struggled to make a meaningful impact thereafter.
His IPL 2026 campaign only made things worse. Representing Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar managed 270 runs from 13 matches at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54. Although he registered a couple of half-centuries, he was unable to produce the kind of match-winning performances that have defined his T20 career in recent years. The five-time champions eventually finished ninth on the points table.
The signals from the board have grown louder. The BCCI omitted him from the 30-member men’s probables list submitted to the Indian Olympic Association for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. That omission, without any official explanation, pointed clearly to where things were heading.
Three Names, One Captain’s Spot
According to PTI, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma are the two primary contenders to replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. Both bring different things to the table, and the choice is not straightforward.
Shreyas, an IPL-winning skipper and current captain of Punjab Kings, plays at number four — the same position Suryakumar occupies. Having played 14 Tests, 76 ODIs, and 51 T20Is, he looks the closest like-for-like replacement, which might also smooth the transition process.
However, there is a personal dynamic at play. Gambhir has certain reservations about Shreyas, who was the captain of KKR in 2024 when the current India head coach was a mentor. At the time, Shreyas had publicly spoken about being underappreciated, something that did not go unnoticed.
The left-field option is the younger Tilak Varma. Many in the selection committee feel the 23-year-old is an ideal candidate given his age. He has already been made captain for the India A series in Sri Lanka to check out his captaincy credentials.

Gambhir’s Pick Faces Selector Resistance
Behind the scenes, the coach and selectors are not entirely aligned. It is no secret that Gambhir’s preferred choice is Sanju Samson, who had a wonderful knockout phase during the T20 World Cup. However, the selectors are not convinced that either Samson or Ishan Kishan could be consistent enough over a prolonged period.
India’s management is now looking at a long-term roadmap for the shortest format, with series against Ireland and England coming up later this month. Whoever gets the nod will walk into the job under considerable scrutiny, given the expectations that follow a World Cup-winning side.
