fastest half century in test by indian

The fastest fifty in Test cricket belongs to Misbah ul Haq, who reached 50 off just 21 balls against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014.

For India, the record is held by Rishabh Pant with a 28-ball fifty against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022, followed by his own 29-ball effort against Australia in Sydney in the 2025 Border-Gavaskar Trophy fifth Test.

The rest of India’s fastest marks include Kapil Dev (30 balls), Shardul Thakur (31 balls), Yashasvi Jaiswal (31 balls), and Virender Sehwag (32 balls).

The real excitement is how the innings exploded in minutes, with sixes flying and bowlers under pressure. The sections ahead break down each knock, the match situation, and how Indian batters are closing in on the world record.

Global Records: Fastest Half Century in Test Cricket

The race for the fastest half-century in a test is truly global, with players from Pakistan to England pushing boundaries. Misbah‑ul‑Haq leads the list with a 21‑ball fifty, while Australian opener David Warner is next with a 23‑ball effort against Pakistan at Sydney in 2017.

These records score 50 runs under 25 balls, which is often seen in T20 cricket (one of the short formats of cricket). Their change in playing dynamics and ability to dominate bowlers has set them apart from others in Test Cricket History.

1. Misbah-ul-Haq: 50 (21 balls)

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq exploded after tea on day four of the second Test to become the player with the fastest half century in Test. He took 22 runs off Steve Smith’s over and reached his half-century in only 21 balls, beating the Test record. Misbah’s fifty contained four fours and four sixes; he reached the mark in 24 minutes and went on to equal Viv Richards’ record for the fastest Test hundred.

Pakistan declared at 293-3 and later bowled Australia out to secure a 356-run victory and a 2-0 series win. His blitz came after Pakistan already led by 189 runs and ensured Australia had no way back.

2.David Warner: 50 (23 balls)

In the 2017 New Year’s Test, David Warner tore into Pakistan’s attack on the final morning. He belted seven fours and three sixes to bring up his half-century from just 23 balls. Warner reached the landmark with a pulled six off Wahab Riaz, confirming the second fastest half-century in Tests behind Misbah.

He was eventually bowled for 55 off 27 deliveries, but his assault allowed Australia to declare quickly and push for a result (the match ended in a draw).

3.Jacques Kallis: 50 (24 balls)

Jacques Kallis

Kallis walked in at 190-3 and launched a brutal assault on a depleted Zimbabwe attack. He reached fifty in 36 minutes off just 24 balls with three fours and five sixes. Reports noted that he eventually holed out for 54 but had already broken Ian Botham’s long-standing record for the fastest half century in Test.

South Africa declared at 340-3, bowled Zimbabwe out for 54, and won by an innings.

4.Ben Stokes: 50 (24 balls)

Promoting himself to open because Zak Crawley was injured, Stokes smashed 55* from 28 balls to chase 82 in just 7.2 overs, marking his name among the fastest half century in Test cricket. His half-century took 24 deliveries (nine fours and a six), eclipsing Ian Botham’s 28-ball English record. (1)

England swept the series 3-0; Stokes joked afterwards that he expected a bottle of champagne from Botham for breaking the record.

5.Shane Shillingford: 50 (25 balls)

Batting at No. 11, off-spinner Shillingford counter-attacked when the West Indies were 134-9. He hammered five sixes and three fours, reaching fifty from 25 balls and finishing unbeaten on 53 as part of an 82-run stand with Sulieman Benn.

With his cameo, West Indies had the score of 216, but he could not prevent a 186-run defeat, despite having one of the fastest half century in Test.

6.Shahid Afridi: 50 (26 balls)

In Pakistan’s second innings of the high-scoring draw, Afridi blasted seven fours and two sixes to bring up his fifty in 26 balls. His 58-off-34 cameo was the quickest Test fifty by a Pakistani and equalled Ian Botham’s for the second fastest half century in Test history.

His fastest half-century in Test, alongside Yasir Hameed, set up Pakistan’s declaration and meant India were left needing 383 in a limited time.

7.Mohammad Ashraful: 50 (26 balls)

Ashraful is also in the list of the fastest half century in Test when he arrived with Bangladesh already behind and counter-attacked, racing to fifty in 27 minutes from 26 balls with nine fours and two sixes.

He eventually made 67 off 41 balls; it was the fastest Test fifty by minutes and the joint second fastest half-century in Test by balls at the time. India still won by an innings and 239 runs, but Ashraful’s cameo was a rare bright spot.

8.Dale Steyn: 50 (26 balls)

Dale Steyn

Steyn’s second Test fifty showcased his hitting power. He joined Vernon Philander with South Africa 367-7 and thrashed six fours and four sixes to reach fifty from 26 balls.

The innings of 58 off 28 balls lifted South Africa to 417-8 before a declaration; the match was drawn. Analysts pointed out that Steyn cemented his name among the second fastest half century in Test in South Africa, behind Kallis.

These numbers show how rare and remarkable it is to chase the fastest half century in test. Each performance reveals a story of intent. As the years go by, more players join the race for the fastest half-century, proving that this format still leaves room for explosive hitting.

Indian Milestones: Fastest Half Century in Test

The Indian cricket team, known for its classical technique, has produced some daring efforts toward the fastest half century in Test cricket by Indian batters. The current national record belongs to wicketkeeper‑batter Rishabh Pant.

In India’s second innings on a tricky pitch, wicket-keeper Pant attacked the spinners and sped to fifty from 28 balls with seven fours and two sixes. His counter-attack allowed India to set Sri Lanka a huge target and led to a 238-run victory.

The innings briefly held the record for the fastest half century in Test cricket by an Indian until Pant broke it again.

2.Rishabh Pant: 50 (29 balls)

Pant almost bettered his own record in the 2025 Sydney Test as the fastest half century in Test. He launched six fours and four sixes to bring up his half-century from 29 balls, eventually holing out for 61 off 33 balls. (2)

He top-edged a six off his first ball and attacked Beau Webster and Mitchell Starc, narrowly missing his own benchmark of 28 balls, named among the fastest half century in Test by Indian. He eventually fell for 61 off 33 balls, but his blitz gave India a lead of over 100 runs and set up a tight match.

3.Kapil Dev: 50 (30 balls)

Kapil Dev

Statisticians list Kapil Dev’s 30-ball half-century at Karachi as India’s first entry on the fastest half century in Test by Indian. Contemporary reports say he scored 73 off 53 balls with fearless hitting, rescuing India from a precarious position.

Although India lost the match, Kapil’s counter-attack became part of Indian cricket folklore, as one of the greatest players of all time recorded his name among the fastest half century in Test cricket.

4.Shardul Thakur: 50 (31 balls)

Thakur entered at 117-6 and changed the complexion of the fourth Test. He clubbed six fours and three sixes, bringing up his half-century from 31 balls and eventually making 57 off 36.

Reports noted that he reached the milestone with a huge six off Craig Overton and recorded one of the fastest half century in Test by Indian in England. Thakur later added another fifty in the second innings as India went on to win by 157 runs.

5.Yashasvi Jaiswal: 50 (31 balls)

As we keep discussing the fastest half century in Test, the emerging opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed ten fours and one six to reach fifty in 31 balls during the first innings. He went on to score 72 and then hit a 43-ball fifty in the second innings.

His twin fifties powered India to a seven-wicket victory despite rain interruptions, and this is the match where he cemented his name as one of the reliable batters of this generation.

5.Virender Sehwag: 50 (32 balls)

Virender Sehwag

Chasing an imposing 387, Sehwag unleashed an audacious assault. He reached his half-century off 32 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Reports describe how he pummelled an exhilarating 83 from 68 balls, giving India a run-rate nearing double figures; within the first five overs, he crashed seven fours and a six and forced Kevin Pietersen to use five bowlers by the 15th over.

Sehwag’s onslaught was one of the fastest half century in Test by an Indian, which set up India’s successful chase and six-wicket win.

Who Could Beat the Fastest Half Century in Test

There are a number of lowest score records as well. But with increasing numbers of countries playing fearless cricket, the competition to have the fastest half-century in Test cricket will just increase. England’s Ben Stokes demonstrated that even the established stars could record new records at the end of their careers. Even young batters like Shardul Thakur show that new talent is willing to break some records in history. (3)

Cricket analysts expect more entries in the record books as pitches flatten and bowlers tire. Ben Duckett and Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams recently registered 32‑ball fifties, hinting at a future where sub-30-ball fifties become common. Players like Rishab Pant, Subhuman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Yashahvi Jaiswal have adopted the attacking mindset, who could be the next generation with fastest half century in Test, influencing players around the world.

All these developments ensure that this statistic will remain a compelling storyline for fans. There’s always the possibility of a new fastest half-century in test on the horizon.

Amit Mishra’s Take

The quest for the fastest half century in Test is no longer a side note in cricket trivia. It’s a benchmark that celebrates daring and rewards players who blend technique with audacity. From Misbah‑ul‑Haq’s 21‑ball masterpiece to Rishabh Pant’s 28‑ball charge, each contribution has added a colourful thread to the fabric of Test cricket.

In the future, I think the record will keep on inspiring old professionals and young fearless ones that there is always time to sprint in a medium that is based on patience. This achievement will guarantee that every generation will pursue the fastest half century in Test examination.
