In March 1987 at Ahmedabad, Sunil Gavaskar scored 63 against Pakistan to become the first batsman to cross the 10,000-run milestone. He reached the landmark in his 212th innings.

Gavaskar’s era offered fewer Test opportunities; India played barely five Tests per year, yet he amassed runs against formidable fast attacks from the West Indies and Australia. He pioneered techniques for facing pace with a compact defence and quick feet.

His achievement, regarded at the time as almost unattainable, opened the door for future generations and underscored the evolution of Test batting.
