South Africa chased down 362 runs against India in Raipur on December 3, 2025. The Proteas got to 362/6 in 49.2 overs. That matched the joint second-highest chase ever done on Indian soil. Aiden Markram made 110 runs. Dewald Brevis added 54. The chase sits at number six in ODI history.
The record still belongs to South Africa. They chased 438/9 against Australia at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg back on March 12, 2006. That record has stood for nearly 20 years now. Australia put up 434/4 batting first. Ricky Ponting scored 164 runs in that innings. South Africa got there with one ball left. They won by one wicket. People still talk about that match.

1. South Africa vs Australia 438/9, Johannesburg, 2006
Australia put up 434 batting first. That was the biggest ODI total anyone had seen at the time. Ricky Ponting scored 164 runs. Nobody thought South Africa could chase it down. Herschelle Gibbs changed everything. He made 175 off 111 balls with 21 fours and seven sixes. Graeme Smith got 90. South Africa got there with one ball left. Mark Boucher hit the winning boundary. People still talk about that match.
2. Netherlands vs Scotland 374/6, Dundee, 2025
Scotland batted first and posted 369. Netherlands walked out and chased it down in 49.2 overs. Max O’Dowd and Bas de Leede did most of the work up front. Nobody expected an associate nation to pull off the second-highest chase in ODI history. The Netherlands showed that smaller cricket nations can compete with anyone on their day. A big statement from Dutch cricket in June 2025.
3. South Africa vs Australia 372/6, Durban, 2016
Australia made 371 batting first at Kingsmead. South Africa needed 372 to win. They got there in 49.2 overs. Faf du Plessis and David Miller led South Africa. The chase came down to the final overs. South Africa held their nerve at the end. Ten years after the 438 chase, the Proteas proved they could do it again. Different players. Same result.
4. England vs West Indies 364/4, Bridgetown, 2019
West Indies batted first and scored 360. England came out and chased it down in 48.4 overs with six wickets left. Alex Hales made 82 runs. Joe Root added 84. This was England under Eoin Morgan playing hard from ball one. They treated 360 like a normal target. Morgan’s side had changed how England thought about big chases. Simple and straight from the start.
5. India vs Australia 362/1, Jaipur, 2013
Australia posted 359 batting first. India chased it down in just 43.3 overs with nine wickets in hand. Rohit Sharma scored 209 runs. That was the highest individual ODI score at that time. Virat Kohli made 115 off 66 balls. The two put on 207 runs together. India made it look easy. One of the most one-sided chases you will ever see in ODI cricket.
6. South Africa vs India 362/6, Raipur, 2025
India made 358 batting first. Rohit Sharma got 87, and Shreyas Iyer added 78. South Africa came out and chased it down in 49.2 overs. Aiden Markram scored 110 off 98 balls. Dewald Brevis got 54. Matthew Breetzke started things off with 68. South Africa proved they can chase big totals away from home, too. Four balls were left when they finished.

7. Australia vs India 359/6, Mohali, 2019
India scored 358 batting first at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Australia chased it down in 47.5 overs. This chase came after the sandpaper scandal. The team was rebuilding, but still got the job done. Usman Khawaja made 91. Shaun Marsh got 75. Peter Handscomb finished with 58 not out. Australia won by four wickets. Shows how good they are at chasing big totals.
8. England vs Pakistan 359/4, Bristol, 2019
Pakistan batted first and scored 358. England got there in 44.5 overs. Just three months after the West Indies chase. Joe Root made 87 runs. Jos Buttler finished on 110 not out. England went hard from the start again. Morgan’s team did not back down from any target. Bristol gave them a flat pitch, and they used it well. Back-to-back big chases in the same year.
9. Pakistan vs South Africa 355/4, Karachi, 2025
South Africa scored 352 batting first at the National Stadium. Pakistan chased it down in 49 overs with one over to spare. Babar Azam made 122 off 107 balls. Mohammad Rizwan got 98 off 89. The two put on 189 runs together. That partnership did most of the damage. Pakistan had been up and down in ODIs through 2024. This win showed their best players could handle the pressure.
10. Australia vs England 356/5, Lahore, 2025
England batted first and posted 354. Australia came out and chased it down in 49.1 overs. Another big chase was added to Australia’s collection. They have done this so many times now that it feels normal for them. Different players keep stepping up each time. Lahore gave them a batting-friendly surface, and they made the most of it. Australia handle pressure better than most teams in world cricket.
Recent Chases That Rewrote the Record Books

The Netherlands team went to Forthill in Dundee on June 12, 2025, and chased 374 against Scotland. They got there in 49.2 overs at 374/6. Second-highest chase in ODI history. Max O’Dowd and Bas de Leede did most of the damage. Nobody saw that coming from an associate nation.
South Africa then topped their own work against India in Raipur. India batted first and made 358/5. Rohit Sharma got 87. Shreyas Iyer added 78. The pitch had something in it for bowlers later on.
Matthew Breetzke started the chase with 68 runs. Aiden Markram took over after that. He made 110 off 98 balls with 10 fours and three sixes. Dewald Brevis got 54. Temba Bavuma chipped in with 46 off 48 balls. Corbin Bosch finished things off with 29 runs in 15 balls. Four balls were left when they won.
That became South Africa’s highest chase in India. They had made 297 in Nagpur back in 2011. The 362 matched Australia’s total in Mohali in 2019. Second-highest chase on Indian grounds. India’s 362/1 in Jaipur in 2013 still tops that list.
Highest Chases Completed in India
Indian grounds see big chases more than most places. Flat pitches. Fast outfields. The ball flies off the bat. Here are the biggest chases done on Indian soil.
| Rank | Team | Score | Target | Opponent | Venue | Year |
| 1 | India | 362/1 | 360 | Australia | Jaipur | 2013 |
| 2 | South Africa | 362/6 | 358 | India | Raipur | 2025 |
| 2 | Australia | 359/6 | 359 | India | Mohali | 2019 |

| 5 | India | 351/7 | 351 | England | Pune | 2017 |
| 6 | Pakistan | 345/6 | 342 | Sri Lanka | Hyderabad | 2023 |
India tops the list with their 362/1 in 2013. Raipur in 2025 sits joint second with Mohali in 2019. Both those chases ended at 359 runs. Twenty years ago, nobody would have believed teams could chase these totals in India.
Australia pops up three times here. They know how to chase big scores in India. Different teams, different years, same result. Pakistan added their name in 2023, chasing 345 in Hyderabad during the Asia Cup.
The match showed how teams have chased big totals in ODI matches when two set batsmen refuse to give their wickets away.Want more cricket records and updates? Follow JeetWin Sports for complete coverage.
