Youngest-ever ICC chief marks first New Year address ahead of T20 World Cup defense on home soil
Dubai, January 1, Jay Shah posted his first New Year message as ICC Chairman at 9:47 AM IST Wednesday on X, telling cricket fans: “Wishing you a boundary-filled year! May your dreams score big and your spirit stay on top!”
The 37-year-old became the youngest person to lead the International Cricket Council when he took office December 1, 2024. His New Year greeting marks his first official address since assuming the chair from New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who stepped down after four years without seeking re-election.
Shah’s message went out 37 days before India defended its T20 World Cup title on home soil. The tournament runs February 7 through March 8 across venues in India and Sri Lanka, with the final set for Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the same ground where Shah spent six years as Gujarat Cricket Association joint secretary overseeing its expansion from 54,000 seats to 132,000 capacity.
From Gujarat to Global Cricket
Jay Shah’s career started at Gujarat Cricket Association in 2009. He became BCCI Honorary Secretary in 2019 at age 31, the youngest ever. He took over as Asian Cricket Council President in 2021. In August 2024, he won the ICC chairman race unopposed when no other cricket board nominated a challenger.
The unopposed election wasn’t about popularity. India brings in 70% of ICC’s broadcast revenue. When the BCCI put Shah’s name forward, boards from England, Australia, and South Africa stayed quiet. His father Amit Shah serves as India’s Home Minister, adding political backing to the appointment.
He’s the fifth Indian to chair ICC after Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000), Sharad Pawar (2010-2012), N. Srinivasan (2014-2015), and Shashank Manohar (2015-2016, 2017-2020). At 37, Shah is 17 years younger than ICC’s previous youngest chairman, Dalmiya, who was 54.
Shah’s term runs two years with the option to renew twice for a maximum six years. The position pays no salary but provides a $1,000 daily allowance for ICC business travel. He technically works from ICC headquarters in Dubai but operates mostly from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Why 2026 Is Cricket’s Biggest Year
The T20 World Cup opens February 7 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with India facing the United States. India and Pakistan meet February 15 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, a match that typically draws 400 million TV viewers across both countries. The March 8 final at Narendra Modi Stadium puts Shah’s management skills under direct scrutiny—he helped build the venue, now he’ll host cricket’s biggest event there.

Beyond the World Cup, cricket appears at the Asian Games September 19 through October 4 in Nagoya, Japan. It’s cricket’s first Asian Games appearance in Japan and part of ICC’s push into East Asian markets where the sport barely exists.
IPL 2026 runs March 26 through May 31 with 84 matches, up from 74 in 2025. RCB enters as defending champions after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs in the 2025 final at Eden Gardens.
Shah also inherited Olympic inclusion from Barclay. Cricket returns to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028 after 128 years, but ICC hasn’t finalized the format (six teams or eight), qualification structure, or player release agreements with T20 franchises that operate year-round. Shah has three years to solve problems that stalled Olympic talks since the 1990s.
What’s At Stake
Shah’s “boundary-filled” phrase carries cricket politics. The 2019 World Cup final was decided by boundary count after a tied Super Over, England beat New Zealand 26-17 on boundaries at Lord’s. ICC scrapped that tiebreaker rule in 2021, but fans still argue boundaries shouldn’t decide world championships. Shah used the phrase anyway in his first major statement.
India enters the T20 World Cup as defending champions after beating South Africa by seven runs in the 2024 final at Bridgetown, Barbados. Rohit Sharma captains the team. Gautam Gambhir coaches. Both face pressure to win at home after India’s last ICC tournament victory on home soil came in 2011 when MS Dhoni lifted the World Cup at Wankhede.
Shah’s message Wednesday morning went out in English on X to 2.4 million followers. Whether his “boundary-filled year” vision works depends on decisions he’ll make starting next month when the T20 World Cup tests the youngest ICC chairman in history.
