The position of the head coach plays a significant role, which revolutionized the legacy of the team. From initial managers to full-time professional coaches, here’s the entire timeline of the Indian cricket team’s head coaches.

Ajit Wadekar
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 16

Ajit Wadekar (1992-1996)

Ajit Wadekar was the first full-time head coach, marking the beginning of a more structured approach within the evolving Indian cricket coach list. Wadekar was the first full-time Indian cricket coach, shifting the profile from that of team manager to a permanent leadership role. India enjoyed a golden era at home, particularly in Tests, under him, where they went unbeaten between 1992 and 1994.

India whitewashed England 3-0 and won the Hero Cup with Mohammad Azharuddin as captain, winning for the first time on the ODI platform. However, their overseas performance was still not up to the mark.

Sandeep Patil
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 17

Sandeep Patil (1996)

Sandeep Patil briefly served as India’s head coach during the challenging 1996 tour of England, which proved to be a forgettable stint for the team. After coaching India, he failed to make a mark with the senior team, and his time with the team was brief. Ironically, he later found coaching success with Oman and Kenya. His name remains an early part of the expanded Indian cricket coach list.

Madan Lal
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 18

Madan Lal (1996–1997)

Former 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal replaced Sandeep Patil but had a mixed bag. His tenure included home wins over Australia and South Africa, but also the infamous 81 all-out against the West Indies. That marked the end of his time as head coach. Despite the short stay, his name adds another important chapter to the Indian cricket coach list.

Anshuman Gaekwad
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 19

Anshuman Gaekwad (1997–1999, 2000)

Gaekwad appears twice in the  Indian cricket coach list, first under Sachin Tendulkar’s captaincy and later during the turbulent post-match-fixing phase, where Kapil Dev resigned following the match-fixing scandal.

Key highlights of his captaincy tenure were an Australian series win at home, Kumble’s 10-wicket haul against Pakistan, and the 2000 ICC KnockOut final match.

Kapil Dev
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 20

Kapil Dev (1999–2000)

The all-time great, Kapil Dev’s career was impaired by scandal. He quit after accusations of match-fixing and on-field below-par performances. His coaching of the team never brought the results as expected from someone with such a great reputation in Indian cricket. Despite his greatness, his time among the Indian cricket coach list remains one of the most controversial.

John Wright
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 21

John Wright (2000–2005)

John Wright became India’s first foreign coach and one of the most impactful leaders in the entire Indian cricket coach list. Wright brought solidity and professionalism to the system. With captain Sourav Ganguly, India recorded record overseas victories and most famously against England and Australia.

Wright also took India to the final of the 2003 World Cup and led the famous Test series victory against Australia in 2001. His leadership is widely considered revolutionary among the modern Indian cricket team coach list.

Greg Chappell
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 22

Greg Chappell (2005–2007)

Chappell’s tenure was not drama-free with the team, most notably with Sourav Ganguly. Though introducing new stars like Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni, his time in power ended with India’s unexpected failure at the 2007 World Cup.

Greg’s style of communicating and disciplinary coaching methods were questioned after India’s failure. Despite the drama, this period remains an unavoidable part of the Indian cricket team coach list.

Gary Kirsten
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 23

Gary Kirsten (2007–2011)

Gary Kirsten stands out as one of the most beloved coaches in the Indian cricket coach list. Kirsten’s era is a nightmare turned into a dream. With MS Dhoni, he guided India to the 2011 World Cup victory, and it was notable because it was their first in 28 years.

Kirsten brought confidence among players, mental strength, and team unity. India achieved the No. 1 Test team ranking during his tenure, as well. However, Gary Kristen left in his prime, which created a huge gap in the Indian cricket team head coach list.

Duncan Fletcher
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 24

Duncan Fletcher (2011–2015)

Duncan Fletcher began on a positive note with the Indian team, but then had a sheer downfall. India were handed an 8-0 defeat in the England and Australian Test tours.

A Champions Trophy win in 2013 raised hopes, but poor performances in Tests resulted in the appointment of Ravi Shastri as Team Director. After the 2015 World Cup, Fletcher moved on, but his period remains a significant entry in the modern Indian cricket coach list.

Ravi Shastri
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 25

Ravi Shastri (Team Director 2014–2016; Head Coach 2017–2021)

Shastri’s long-term association brought consistency. India won the Asia Cup and Test series in Australia twice and became the No.1 Test team for a long period. His friendship with Virat Kohli defined this period. However, ICC trophies remained out of reach, with semi-final exits in the 2019 World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup. His long-term presence makes him one of the most influential names in the Indian cricket team head coach list.

Anil Kumble
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 26

Anil Kumble (2016–2017)

This brief yet hugely successful tenure of Kumble saw the team win series over all of the top countries and only one test loss in 13 games. It was internal drama and, most notably, Virat Kohli that caused him to resign (1).

Despite his fallout with Virat Kohli, he still stands out as one of the most successful coaches featured in the Indian cricket coach list, thanks to his consistent results and long-term impact on the team.

Rahul Dravid
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 27

Rahul Dravid (2021–2024)

Dravid was ideal to be appointed as coach since he had experience working with India A and U19 teams. He was focused on developing bench strength and young talent. India reached the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final and the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Although there was success that was consistent, India failed in the ICC finals. Dravid remains a respected figure within the Indian cricket coach list for his long-term vision.

Gautam Gambhr
Indian Cricket Coach List: Timeline of All Head Coaches 28

Gautam Gambhir (2024–Present)

Gambhir was given the charge in July 2024, and his appointment signals a new beginning. He has already established himself as a tough, no-nonsense player. The former opener is all set to inject some fire into the team. His name in the Indian cricket team coach list 2024 reflects the board’s focus on bringing in a leader who can combine tactical insight with team motivation.

His stretch as Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor while they won their championship-winning IPL 2024 season was the talk of the town and has gotten the ball rolling for himself and the Indian team.

Anju Jain, Purnima Rau, and Tushar Arothe were coaches who helped in the development of young talent and steered the team during ICC tournaments. W.V. Raman and Ramesh Powar developed tactics, fitness and global competitiveness in recent years.

Today, Amol Muzumdar introduces training of a modern type that trains the star players and strengthens the bench. Each of these coaches in the Indian women’s cricket coach list has helped to establish India as a formidable global women’s cricket power.

Amit Mishra’s Take

Being a coach of the Indian team is never easy; it comes with managing egos, media scrutiny, and national expectations. As we go through the Indian cricket coach list since the quiet regime of John Wright and the scandals of Chappell and the trust-building of Kirsten to the swagger of Shastri, all of the coaches have left a distinct imprint on Indian cricket.

With the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the coach, he brings another thrilling name to the list of Indian cricket coach list, which is expected to add the element of fire, purpose, and uncompromising attitude. (2)

Fans are hopeful that this chapter in the Indian cricket coach list will deliver not just victories, but the ICC trophies that have eluded India for years.
