Jahanara Alam, a veteran cricketer, has created a heated debate in the circles of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). She represented her country in major tournaments, including the ODI World Cup 2022. But this time around the matter is serious she has accused a former BCB selector of indecent behavior.
Jahanara’s Allegations: Former Selector Accused
During a recent YouTube interview with journalist Riasad Azim, Jahanara’s allegations disclosed that the former selector, Manjurul Islam had a habit of drawing girls near him and pushing them against his chest. He would comment on their personal lives, like questioning them about their menstrual periods.
Women’s Wing’s reaction to Jahanara’s allegations
The Women’s Wing Chairman of the BCB, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, claimed that they are not taking the case lightly and will have a fair and comprehensive investigation into it. The Board has further assured the people and the players that there will never be any misconduct, irrespective of position and status.
The committee has already started taking testimonies of players and employees who could have been in a position to observe the investigated behavior.
What Happens Next?
The BCB’s internal investigation team clarified they will investigate, examine, and report Jahanara’s allegations within 15 days. In the case where the allegations prove to be true, legal action is likely to follow.
Additionally, numerous players from the Bangladesh cricket team spoke in support. Tamim Iqbal, a former national men’s captain took to Facebook and wrote,
“The allegations raised by Jahanara Alam are extremely serious, and if proven true, they are absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances. Such behavior cannot be tolerated.”
He even urged other female cricketers to speak up and come forward with courage if a similar incident had happened and promised to have their backs.
Fellow players have lauded Jahanara bravery in coming out to speak about such issues in a sport where such issues are usually shrouded in secrecy.
Jahanara Alam: A Record Setter
The 31-year-old woman is one of the most successful women in Bangladesh in the field of cricket. She became the first Bangladeshi female to make a five-wicket haul in T20 internationals, and played in various ICC tournaments on behalf of the team, including the ODI World Cup 2022. Her last play for Bangladesh during a series against Ireland was in 2023.
She is also one of the most experienced players in the Bangladesh women’s cricket team, as she has been playing in the national team since 2011.
Jahanara’s allegations and decision to speak out will encourage other cricketers to speak about their experiences and demand a safer and more professional environment in women’s sports of cricket.
