WPL Delhi Capitals’ Lizelle Lee Penalised for Code of Conduct Violation

Wicketkeeper-batter fined 10% match fees and handed demerit point after showing dissent during the Mumbai Indians match

Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee received a penalty for breaching the Women’s Premier League Code of Conduct. The match referee fined her 10 percent of her match fees and added one demerit point to her record. The incident occurred during Delhi Capitals’ match against Mumbai Indians in Vadodara.

Lee was stumped in the 11th over while batting on 46 off 28 balls. Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Rahila Firdous completed the stumping after Lee attempted a leg-side shot off Amanjot Kaur’s bowling. The ball went wide down the leg side. Lee’s bat momentarily lifted outside the crease.

The on-field umpire referred the decision to the third umpire. Television replays showed Lee’s bat was off the ground when the bails came off. The third umpire ruled her out. Lee argued with the umpire after the decision. Because she showed dissent, she was charged with a Level 1 breach under Article 2.8.

The Dismissal Controversy

The stumping created debate among fans on social media. Some viewers felt the decision was harsh. Others supported the third umpire’s call based on available camera angles. The side-angle replay clearly showed the bat in the air. The front camera angle was less conclusive.

Lee walked off the field visibly upset. She had been batting well and looked set for a bigger score. Her dismissal shifted momentum briefly in the match. Delhi Capitals were chasing a target of 155 runs set by Mumbai Indians.

Captain Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the chase after Lee’s exit. She scored an unbeaten 51 off 37 balls to guide Delhi Capitals to victory. The win kept Delhi in playoff contention in the WPL 2026 schedule race.

Lee’s WPL 2026 Performance

Lee has been in good form this season. She scored 163 runs before this match. This was her second half-century in her maiden WPL campaign. She sits just behind Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the Orange Cap race. Kaur had 165 runs at that point.

The 33-year-old former South Africa international retired from international cricket four years ago. She now focuses on franchise T20 cricket. Lee plays for Hobart Hurricanes in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League. She scored 305 runs in the recent WBBL season. She hit an unbeaten 77 in the WBBL final.

Delhi Capitals bought Lee for her wicketkeeping and aggressive batting. She opens the innings for the team. Her strike rate and ability to score quickly make her valuable in the powerplay overs. The franchise also features young talent like Nandini Sharma, who made her WPL debut this season.

Code of Conduct Rules

The WPL follows strict conduct rules for all players. Level 1 offenses include showing dissent at umpire decisions. Penalties range from fines to demerit points. Players who accumulate demerit points face suspension.

This is not the first conduct penalty in WPL 2026. Earlier in the season, Harmanpreet Kaur received a fine for a similar offense. She was penalized during a match between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz. The league maintains discipline standards to protect umpiring authority.

The match referee’s decision is final and binding. Players cannot appeal conduct penalties. The fine amount goes to the league’s disciplinary fund.

Lee accepted the penalty without further protest. She will be available for the Delhi Capitals’ remaining matches. The team needs wins to secure a playoff spot. They face competition from several teams with similar points.

Delhi Capitals hope Lee continues her scoring form despite the setback. Her experience and match-winning ability remain crucial for the team’s playoff push.
