Legendary cricket personality Mahendra Singh Dhoni seals the cool. Yes, you heard it right. “Captain Cool” is more than just a title now. The former cricketer has officially turned the phrase into a legal identity, filing a trademark.
According to India Today, Dhoni’s lawyer Mani Aggarwal disclosed that the application is already accepted as well as advertised, and further, the trademark is published in the official trademark journal in June 2025.

“Captain Cool” is not only a nickname, but it is now a property owned by MS Dhoni, the most prolific wicket-keeper batsman. He wants exclusive rights to use ‘Captain Cool’ for sports training, coaching services, and training centres.
Trade Marks Registry portal disclosed that his application has already been accepted and is now advertised too, publicized on 16th June 2025 in the official trademark.

Dhoni’s lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal, said, “Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal.”

Further, Aggarwal said filing a trademark was not an easy task for them. Initially, the Registry office objected, citing that there was already a similar trademark registered in the office, which might confuse the public. Nevertheless, Aggarwal and the team proposed the registry office for consideration.
Since the phrase ‘Captain Cool’ has acquired a distinct secondary meaning through a long-standing and widespread association with Mr Dhoni, their proposal was ultimately approved.
Besides Captain Cool, he is also well recognized as Mahi and Thala.
