Top 10 Umpires in Cricket

Cricket is a game of fine margins, and umpires decide those margins most of the time. Cricket has seen some of the finest umpires who have given some sport-defining decisions as well.

Even though cricket has been more technology-driven, it is fair to say that the role of umpires remains evident to this day. Since the start of the game, there have been some great umpires, and today, we will focus on the top 10 umpires in cricket.

Simon Taufel (Australia)

When we talk about the top 10 umpires in cricket, Simon Taufel walks into the list. He began his umpiring journey at the age of 24, made his international cricket debut in 1999, and test debut in 2000.

He has umpired in most matches, but because of the skills, results, and aura of the man. In total, Simon has been awarded ICC Umpire of the Year 5 years in a row starting from 2004-2008.

Better decision-making and good rapport with the players are what highlight Simon Taufel as an umpire. Simon officiated in 282 international matches in a career that spanned 13 years.

Aleem Dar (Pakistan)

An umpire from Pakistan who made a name for himself with good decisions and a calm head is Aleem Dar. An umpire journey that started in 2000 went on to run for 24 years. Thus, it is easy to say he is the longest-running umpire of the game.

Well respected by the players and colleagues, Dar went on to officiate in 145 test matches, 88 T20I, and 291 ODI matches.  It would be impossible for any other umpire to do the same for such a long time.

Steve Bucknor (West Indies)

A controversial umpire who seemed to have some beef against the Indian cricket team is Steve Bucknor. Everybody is well aware of his 2008 issues in the tour of Australia. Besides that series, Bucknor is one of the finest umpires of the game.

An umpiring career that ran for 20 years was marred both by accolades and controversy at the same time. Bucknor is famous for making late decisions and some controversial ones, too. His umpiring prowess boasts 130 test matches and 208 ODI matches.

Billy Bowden (New Zealand)

Umpiring doesn’t always mean seriousness, but sometimes it also involves fun and joy. Billy Bowden is one of the premier examples of how umpiring needs to be.

His crooked finger style of declaring a batsman out became so popular that he was featured in the 2011 World Cup. Moreover, his dancing signals for a 6 or a 4 make him a unique umpire.

Bowden started his umpiring career in 1995, and it went on until 2016. In total, the Kiwi was part of 104 tests, 259 ODI, and 32 T20I matches as an umpire.

Dickie Bird (England)

Not a lot of the readers might have heard about Dickie Bird, the umpire. The major reason for that would be his umpiring career. Bird’s umpiring career started in 1973 and set the bar higher.

It won’t be a mistake to say that Dickie Bird was the umpire who led the way for other umpires and maintained a higher standard.

Their biggest achievement of Bird would be the fact that he was the umpire in the 1975 World Cup finals. Fairness, humor, and undying love for the game are what define Dickie Bird.

David Shepherd (England)

Before Billy Bowden was a thing in cricket, it was all about David Shepherd. An always smiling umpire, David never made mistakes on the cricket field. Coming from England, David started the umpiring career in 1983.

An umpiring career that went on for 22 years is all about respect. David Shepherd umpire in 264 games. His most unique style would be lifting one foot when the score would reach 111 runs. Such a character on the field.

Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka)

A modern-day great in the case of umpiring is Kumar Dharmasena. Coming from Sri Lanka, he played with Sangakkara and Jayawardene and umpired against them in international cricket.

Often called the modern-day maestro, Kumar was umpire of the year in 2012 and 2018. His biggest achievement would be officiating in the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was a spectacle on its own. Kumar is still active in the umpiring alleys.

Rudi Koertzen (South Africa)

The slow finger of death is an iconic decision-making technique when we talk cricket. Rudi Koertzen walks into the list of top 10 umpires in cricket. His achievements have been innumerable for the game.

His slow and dreaded finger was a signal to the batsman about a slow death. His umpiring career started in 1992 and went on for 18 years. In all of those 18 years, Rudi officiated in 331 games, which is the second-highest on the list.

Richard Kettleborough (England)

Another modern-day maestro who is present in big crunch matches is Richard Kettleborough. An English umpire, Richard, has been part of the cricket umpiring world for 16 years now.

From the ODI World Cup to the World Test Championship finals, you name it, and Richard’s name will pop up one way or the other. After officiating in 239 matches, Richard can tell he is one of the finest in the game.

Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand)

The last name in the list of top 10 umpires in cricket is Chris Gaffaney. A Kiwi umpire genius, Chris is a jovial and fun-loving person on the cricket field. But when it comes to rules, Chris won’t move an inch.

In the last decade, Gaffaney has made his mark as an umpire. Starting in 2010, Gaffaney has already officiated in 200 international matches. Looking at the age and experience, Chris might challenge the record of Aleem Dar.
