The USA Cricket Board has asked the ICC for immediate intervention to remove a rival group of directors, including Venu Pisike, as the fallout from the board’s suspension continues to deepen. They have also requested the ICC to conduct an investigation to find out the reason for the organization’s collapse.
Directors from the USA Cricket Board have called for “immediate and decisive intervention not to punish, but to rebuild what has been broken.”
Directors’ Statements
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the two current directors Arjun Rao Gona and Kuljit Singh Nijjar, and Patricia Whittaker, who was removed by the USA Cricket Board last year from the post of an independent director, have asked the ICC to conduct a forensic audit of USA Cricket dealings and make the financial statements public. Gona and Nijjar are elected directors while Patricia is still legally contesting the termination.
The ICC’s decision statement on September 23 about the suspension read: “We call for immediate and decisive intervention not to punish, but to rebuild what has been broken,” the trio said in the statement. “This is no longer a crisis of management; it is a test of integrity and courage.” The directors’ statement follows USAC’s media release last week, where the board complained it could not “comprehend.”
Matters grew worse on 1 October. Chairman Venu Pisike called for a meeting that voted 5-4 to place USAC into bankruptcy as part of a financial rebuild. Pisike, Srini Salver, David Haubert, Pintoo Shah, and Anj Balusu, all voted for this decision. Gona, Nijjar, Nadia Gruny and Atul Rai walked out to protest.
Rai later claimed that day’s public statement “was not authorised by the board,” and labeled it “clearly an abuse of power and authority.”

ICC’s Take and NGB
The ICC Board took a decision to suspend the USA Cricket Board, stating “repeated and continued breaches of its obligation as a member”. The ICC’s major concern will be if USAC could secure NGB (National Governing Body) status from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USoPC), which is necessary for all sports that are part of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
In order to gain National Governing Body (NGB) status from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee before the 2028 Los Angeles Games, the ICC formed a Normalisation Committee with a six-step plan. The first obligation for three new independent directors is to replace the existing board, hold fresh elections, and rewrite the constitution.
Gona, Nijjar, and Whittaker want that committee to take control straight away and go beyond administrative control and conduct a full, independent investigation into the root causes of USA Cricket’s collapse. The investigation’s motive is to identify every act of constitutional breach, misuse of authority, and conflict of interest. They have also suggested the idea of five new independents, once the constitution is formulated.
Why does any of this matter?
The United States will be co-hosting next year’s Men’s T20 World Cup along with the West Indies, and has high hopes for Olympic participation in 2028. An unexpected governance dispute, or bad financial melt-down will affect both the events.
Former USA captain Saurabh Netravalkar, speaking informally last week, signaled player’s concerns: “We just want clarity. Our focus should be on cricket, not bank statements.” Not only players but several state associations share that same frustration, noting delayed pay cuts for their recent domestic season.
Money is a very important factor to rebuild the USA Cricket Board. In theory, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy would protect USAC from the creditors while allowing it to reorganise and rebuild. But, bankruptcy signals failure in the system, and will scare off sponsors.
Amit Mishra’s Take
The board’s plea to the ICC for immediate intervention signals mismanagement, and a loss of trust in the USA Cricket Board. The directors are asking for transparency and accountability. It is more than an administrational issue, as safeguarding the credibility of U.S. Cricket, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Olympics, will be very crucial .
For the moment, American cricket sits in limbo: suspended internationally, internally split and potentially insolvent. The next few weeks will shape whether the sport emerges with a cleaner structure – or sinks deeper into acrimony.
