BCCI Announces INR 51cr Cash Prize For Indian Women After World Cup Win

Women's World Cup win

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declared a huge cash award of INR 51 crore to the Indian women’s cricket team, after their historic ICC Women’s World Cup win.

It was the first time in history that a team led by Harmanpreet Kaur won the trophy defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final, at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. It is not only the players who are proud, but also the Indian cricket fans, who saw the women’s team make history on home soil.

A Historic Reward after the Women’s World Cup Win

The victory of Indian women in this World Cup is not only a trophy—it is the beginning of glorious women’s cricket in India. The cash prize of 51 crore, granted by BCCI, is higher than the official prize offered by ICC, which is approximately 39.78 crore, and this is an indicator of how much trust the Indian board places in its players.

After the Women’s World Cup win, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia affirmed this was to express gratitude to the team for their outstanding performance and contribution to the game.

Saikia credited BCCI president Jay Shah for helping with the idea and commended the team on their spirited play during the tournament. Even as ICC declined to involve itself, BCCI had no reservations on giving 51 crores to the Indian team, comprising players, selectors, and the support staff involved in the Women’s World Cup win.

The money will be shared among all who contributed to the terrific campaign of India, such as coach Amol Muzumdar and the backroom staff.

India’s All-round Dominance in the Final

India ruled in all three sectors of the game in the grand finale of the Women’s World Cup win. The hosts also batted first, and with a solid 87 and 58 by Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma, respectively, they registered a total of 298/7.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt replied with a wonderful 101, but she was unable to do it as the bowlers of India finished the game with force. Deepti Sharma also caught the five-wicket haul with the ball and won the Player of the Match award, being a huge contributor to Women’s World Cup win.

The team never lost its spirit and faith during the innings. India continued to keep the scoreboard ticking even after the initial wickets, scoring 100 in 17.2 overs.

  • Result: India Women won by 52 runs
  • Player of the Match: Deepti Sharma (5/37 & 58 runs)

Other important contributions came from Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Richa Ghosh. This entire team performance led to India eventually winning the World Cup they narrowly missed in 2005 and 2017.

Amit Mishra’s Take

This win, by the Indian women at the World Cup, is not just a milestone but rather a message that Indian women’s cricket has finally been heard.

This 51 crore award by BCCI is not only money but also appreciation, respect, and encouragement to the upcoming generation of players.

The team of Harmanpreet Kaur has granted India a moment to live in forever, and this victory will encourage many young girls to dream with a bat and a ball in their hands.
