Jacob Bethell’s 105 in Vain as India Beat England by 7 Runs to Reach T20 World Cup 2026 Final

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final match saw India in the finals of the tournament. Held at Mumbai’s famous Wankhede Stadium on March 5, 2026, India defeated England by a narrow margin of 7 runs, earning a spot in the tournament’s final against New Zealand.

Despite the loss, England’s Jacob Bethell became the standout performer in the match with his century. His blistering 105 runs from just 48 balls kept England in the competition right up to the final moments.

The semifinal in the T20 World Cup 2026 featured two of the top-performing teams. The tournament saw both teams deliver standout performances.

India carried a wave of confidence into the semi-final. They had won 3 out of 4 games in Super 8, a batting lineup that could do serious damage, and a bowling attack that knew its way around the game.

England, on the other hand, had shown themselves to be a surprisingly complete team during the tournament. Their combination of aggressive batting and a bowling attack capable of adjusting to any circumstance made them a team to be reckoned with.

India took advantage of the home ground, their familiar surroundings and a deep knowledge of the stadium. The chasing team, however, relied on their aggressive approach to batting.

After winning the toss, India decided to bat first. The decision showed an instant outcome; their top order went after England’s bowlers right from the start. Sanju Samson’s knock was the highlight of India’s outstanding performance, a display of some of the best T20 batting he’s ever had.

Samson’s batting was exceptional, just like the one from his previous match against the West Indies. He made 89 runs off a mere 42 deliveries, the ball rocketing off his bat to every corner of the field. His innings proved he is a world-class batter as he scored eight fours and five sixes, all delivered with a strike rate of over 210.

The Indian middle order had a lot to prove, ensuring that the team’s run rate remained steady for the remainder of the game. India’s innings concluded with a total of 253 runs, though they lost seven wickets during their twenty overs. It’s a noteworthy score, placing it among the top performances in T20 World Cup knockout history.

The English bowlers found it difficult to keep the runs down. Will Jacks, however, offered a flicker of hope, taking 2 wickets for 40 runs.

Chasing down 254 runs in a World Cup semi-final was never going to be easy. But England seemed confident as they began their pursuit. The opening overs hinted at something good. England’s batsmen were on the attack, taking the game to the bowlers.

However, the weight of the massive target proved too much, and wickets tumbled at the most inopportune times. Despite losing partners at the other end, Jacob Bethell stood firm. Jacob Bethell’s batting was the highlight of England’s innings.

Jacob Bethell’s Incredible Century

The young left-hander, facing the heat, batted with remarkable composure. Bethell smashed 105 runs off 48 balls, bringing up his century with a flurry of boundaries. His innings included 9 fours, 6 sixes and Strike rate above 218.

He dominated India’s bowlers and almost pulled off one of the greatest chases in T20 World Cup history. Bethell’s century was especially impressive because he had to consistently make runs while wickets were falling at the other end.

Despite Bethell’s outstanding display, England’s batting order kept collapsing at crucial moments, and this, in the end, sealed their fate.

Indian Bowlers Held Their Nerve

The Indian bowlers had to show some serious discipline if they were going to protect that massive score. The English batsmen battled fearlessly, keeping the game competitive right up to the final moments.

India’s bowlers proved their strength, snagging crucial wickets precisely when England seemed to be taking control. Hardik Pandya’s bowling was exceptional in India’s victory.

He claimed two wickets, conceding 38 runs during his four-over spell. The bowlers, using a blend of slower deliveries and yorkers, were remarkably successful in the final overs, successfully denying England a victory.

England’s innings concluded with a total of 246 runs, seven wickets down. They fell short of the target by a mere seven runs.

India’s victory means they’re headed to the T20 World Cup 2026 Final. Their opponent will be New Zealand, who defeated South Africa in the preceding semi-final. The next game promises to be another thrilling contest, pitting two strong teams against each other.

The India-England semi-final was a T20 match that will be talked about for years. India’s batting, a dazzling display of power, appeared to have secured their win. England, against the odds, nearly secured a stunning victory, a feat largely thanks to Jacob Bethell’s exceptional century.

Bethell’s 105, while falling short of securing a win, was a display of pure talent and explosive batting that will always be remembered in cricket history. This win puts India one step nearer to their T20 World Cup victory.

Armed with a formidable batting order and seasoned bowlers, they’ll approach the final with a sense of confidence. The lesson from the semi-final was unmistakable: in T20 cricket, a lead can vanish in a heartbeat.
