India beat the USA by 29 runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match at Wankhede Stadium on Friday. Captain Suryakumar Yadav scored an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls to rescue India from a batting collapse. India made 161 for nine wickets. The USA were bowled out for 132 in reply.
The win gave India their ninth consecutive T20 World Cup victory. That breaks the record shared by South Africa and Australia, who both had eight straight wins. Jasprit Bumrah missed the match due to a fever. Mohammed Siraj took his place and picked up two wickets.
Suryakumar Rescues India From 77 for Six
India won the toss, but the USA chose to field first. The decision paid off immediately. India lost four wickets in the power play and was 46 for 4. Abhishek Sharma got out for a golden duck. Ishan Kishan made 20 before getting dismissed. Tilak Varma scored 25 but could not stay long enough.
Suryakumar walked in with India struggling at 77 for six in the 13th over. Shubham Ranjane dropped him when he was on 15 runs in the 10th over. That catch would have left India at 92 for seven. Suryakumar went on to score 84 not out. He hit 10 fours and four sixes in his 49-ball knock.
Shadley van Schalkwyk bowled brilliantly for the USA. He took four wickets for 25 runs. His spell included a triple-wicket over that ripped through India’s middle order. Saurabh Netravalkar went for 65 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. That became the most expensive spell in T20 World Cup history. The previous record was 64 runs conceded by Sanath Jayasuriya against Pakistan in 2007.

USA Falls Short Despite Good Start
The USA needed 162 to win. They lost captain Monank Patel for a golden duck. Andries Gous got out early, too. Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Milind Kumar put on a 50-run partnership to keep the USA in the hunt. Krishnamurthi made 37 off 31 balls. Milind scored 34. Shubham Ranjane also made 37.
India’s bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Mohammed Siraj finished with two for 29. Arshdeep Singh grabbed two for 18. Axar Patel took two for 24. Varun Chakravarthy picked up a wicket to extend his streak to 14 consecutive T20I innings with at least one dismissal, continuing the strong form shown in recent matches like the India U19 match against Pakistan.
The USA finished on 132 for eight. They never got close enough to make India nervous. Ali Khan left the field with a groin injury during his spell. That reduced the USA’s bowling options when they batted.

India’s Record Ninth Straight Win
This was India’s ninth T20 World Cup win in a row. No team has won more consecutive matches in the tournament. South Africa and Australia both had eight-match winning streaks before India broke that mark. 161 India also became the lowest successful total at Wankhede Stadium in T20 internationals.
The pitch had an uneven bounce, helping spinners. There was limited dew during the match. That made batting difficult throughout the game. Suryakumar admitted after the match that he felt pressure while batting. He said getting to the end made all the difference.
India plays their next match against Namibia on February 12. The team will need better starts with the bat. Losing four wickets in the power play cannot become a pattern. Suryakumar cannot rescue the team in every match, as India’s 2026 calendar shows a packed schedule ahead.
Harmeet Singh and Saurabh Netravalkar both have backgrounds in Indian cricket. Harmeet played Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. Netravalkar was part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad in 2010. They bowled against their former country but could not stop Suryakumar’s innings.
The opening ceremony before the match featured performances by Badshah, Nora Fatehi, Sivamani, and Rishab Rikhiram Sharma. Rohit Sharma attended as the tournament brand ambassador. ICC chairman Jay Shah was also present at Wankhede.
