The rumours turned into news when Sri Lanka Cricket announced Lasith Malinga as the Sri Lanka bowling coach for the T20 World Cup. The legendary Sri Lankan bowler will play the role of bowling coach in the T20 World Cup as per the announcement, and his tenure will be between December 15 and January 25, 2026.

His role as a consultant for 40 days leading up to the 2026 tournament will certainly help the team with the amount of experience he brings, and fans hope he can teach a new generation to finish games as well.

Lasith Malinga Appointed as Sri Lanka Bowling Coach for T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka has turned to one of their greatest cricketing icons as it prepares for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as the former fast bowler, Lasith Malinga, has returned to the shorter format in a new role as a Sri Lanka bowling coach for the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced the appointment in an official statement, which made it clear that this is a short-term assignment that will last between December 15, 2025, and January 25, 2026.

The fact that Malinga is returning as the coach of the Sri Lankan team for the T20 World Cup is important, as it will only be a few months before the event, which will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka. It also reminds the fans of the best T20 moment of the country when Malinga led Sri Lanka to their only T20 World Cup victory in 2014, beating India in the final.

Although Malinga is no longer the sling-armed nightmare to batters on the field, his experience in the World Cup T20 situations is priceless. He is said to be the master of death bowling in the world and is supposed to guide the young pacers of Sri Lanka on the aspects of tactical awareness, temperament and execution during critical times.

His experience in coaching franchise cricket is also an added benefit. By re-engaging Malinga in the job of bowling coach of the Sri Lankan team in the T20 World Cup, the team is making a nostalgic decision rather than a tactical one, since his advice is likely to put the team ahead of the pack in the home country.

Malinga’s Playing and Coaching Credentials

To appreciate why he is now Sri Lanka’s bowling coach for the T20 World Cup, consider his haul in different formats of the game: 101 Test wickets, 338 ODI wickets and 107 T20I wickets. These returns make him Sri Lanka’s leading T20I wicket-taker and a pioneer of yorker-laden death bowling. He also took four wickets in four balls and multiple hat-tricks.

In the franchise arena, he was just as dominant. He played 139 games and became the highest wicket-taker with 195 wickets with an economy of 7.12 for the Mumbai Indians and made them win four IPL titles and one Champions League trophy. Along with this, his 390 wickets in 295 matches all over the T20 matches are a great consistency.

These statistics support his role as the bowling coach in the T20 World Cup for Sri Lanka, as he is knowledgeable about how to perform in the format.

How Malinga Can Elevate Sri Lanka’s Attack

Malinga’s value lies in technical know-how and mental fortitude. His trademark toe-crushing yorker is a skill younger bowlers struggle to master. As Sri Lanka’s bowling coach for the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to start from February 7 to March 8, he can run focused drills on release points and wrist positions while teaching bowlers like Pathirana and Thushara.

With the first clash against Ireland in Colombo on February 8, 2026, the team is looking to take full advantage of their home soil. However, as the game progresses, they are set to face Oman, Australia, and Zimbabwe in different cities of Sri Lanka.

He will enhance variation and composure throughout the attack by exchanging field setting tactics. In addition to his talents, just his presence as a World Cup-winning captain and an idol among players, he is bound to make people believe and stick together in the dressing room.

Coaching Experience and Journey

His net worth from his cricket career was massive, but after retiring in 2021, Malinga has also earned a fine coaching resume. He has coached Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, mentored Mumbai Indians and worked as a bowling coach with MI New York and MI Cape Town, which has exposed him to a variety of conditions and bowling cultures, making him a bowling coach to Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup.

In 2022, Sri Lanka Cricket utilized that knowledge by making him the bowling strategy coach. This partnership is continued by the new short-term assignment from 15 December 2025 to 25 January 2026, and this wealth of experience underlines why selectors view him as the ideal bowling coach for the T20 World Cup, who can translate lessons from franchise leagues into national success.
