I Love Getting Wickets!” – Maxwell Eyes New-Ball Spin Role for Australia’s Title Charge

Australia’s veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is sharpening his spin for the opening overs as he gears up to help drive the team’s title charge at next year’s subcontinent T20 World Cup. He showed that intent recently in Darwin, where he took two early wickets against South Africa – including a scalp of skipper Aiden Markram (caught at mid-off) – and could barely contain his joy afterward.

“I love getting wickets,” Maxwell grinned after that match, pumping his fist in celebration. Fox Cricket commentator Mark Howard even quipped that Maxwell was “almost frothing at the mouth like a mad dog!” with excitement.

With spin-friendly Indian pitches on the horizon, Maxwell’s new-ball exploits suggest Australia may have found an attacking surprise.

[TRENDING] Maxwell Embraces Powerplay Spin Role

Maxwell has not traditionally been a powerplay bowler – in fact, he’d sent down just five overs in the first six of any T20 innings since 2022. However, Australia’s plans have changed.

In Cairns the veteran explained that dry subcontinent surfaces allow even the hard new ball to grip for spinners. “It might be something we think about heading forward,” he said, signalling a deliberate strategy.

Accordingly, the team threw Maxwell the new ball in the opening overs of both T20s against South Africa, bowling him two overs under powerplay restrictions in each match.

It’s a bold shift – most sides start with speedsters – but this chess-like move has Maxwell looking to checkmate the openers. In effect, he’s treating the first overs like a puzzle to solve, using spin as an unexpected weapon.

[REPORT] Preparing for the World Cup

Statistically, Maxwell can back this up. He already has 49 T20I wickets to his name – 17 of them in powerplays – showing he can strike early when given a chance.

His franchise stats support it too: since 2022 he’s kept a tidy 7.30 economy in the first six overs of IPL innings (with eight wickets). In short, while Maxwell is often picked for his thunderous batting, he’s quietly proven he can be tidy up front.

If he and fellow spinner Adam Zampa can pair as dual new-ball options on Asian pitches, it would echo Australia’s spin-heavy approach at the 2023 World Cup. After all, Maxwell has made an impact before – he famously removed India captain Rohit Sharma during the powerplay of the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

With added variations and guile, Maxwell could become as valuable with the ball as he is with the bat. If this gamble pays off, it will be hailed as a masterstroke; even if not, it shows Maxwell’s versatility and team-first attitude.

South Africa Series

So far, the experiment has yielded mixed results. Maxwell has claimed three wickets across the two games, with an economy around 9.12.

Those breakthroughs came at key moments – he grabbed two of them in the second T20 (including the Markram dismissal) – helping Australia seize momentum. His batting, by contrast, has been quiet (just 17 runs in the series), underscoring that his focus here is clearly bowling.

The series now heads to a decider in Cairns, where Maxwell will again open the bowling. The crowd will watch closely: if he strikes early again, it could swing the match.

And even if not, each over Maxwell bowls at the top is another data point in Australia’s grand plan for spin-friendly conditions.

A Title Charge Brewing

Looking ahead, Maxwell’s new-ball role is a clear statement of intent. He insists he’s “trying to play whatever role is needed”, and team strategy may have found a fresh wrinkle.

On dry Asian wickets, a spinner in the powerplay could be a game-changer – like pulling a surprise ace from your sleeve. If Maxwell’s aggressive spin gambit succeeds, it will add a deadly new dimension to Australia’s title assault. If it falls flat, at least he can say he gave every effort.

Amit Mishra’s Thoughts

Maxwell’s transition from just hitting the ball hard to being a smart bowler with the new ball makes things more exciting as we get ready. It might work or it might not, but it’s just the kind of surprise that keeps us excited.
