Pakistan’s journey at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, 28 February 2026, despite beating Sri Lanka by five runs in a last-ball thriller at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
The result was a brutal lesson in the arithmetic of cricket tournaments: winning is not always enough. To leapfrog New Zealand and claim the second semi-final spot from Super 8 Group 2, Pakistan needed to win by at least 65 runs, or bowl Sri Lanka out within 13.1 overs in a chase scenario.ย
They did neither. Sri Lanka finished on 207/6, well above the 147 Pakistan needed to restrict them to, and New Zealand’s net run rate remained beyond reach. England and New Zealand advance from the group; Pakistan fly home.

Record-Breaking Start: Farhan and Zaman Dominate the T20 WC
After Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to field, Pakistan’s openers Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman came out swinging with one purpose: post a total so big that the required margin of victory became reachable. They delivered one of the greatest opening partnerships in T20 World Cup history.
The pair raced to 64 without loss inside the powerplay, Pakistan’s highest powerplay total of this tournament edition. By the 10th over, the partnership had passed 100. When it finally ended in the 16th over, Fakhar Zaman was dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera for a blazing 84 off 42 balls, going wide outside off. He tried to reach out but could only get an inside edge that deflected onto the stumps.
The opening stand had reached 176, a new T20 World Cup record for any wicket, beating Finn Allen and Tim Seifert’s unbroken 175 against the UAE earlier in the same tournament.
Two Centuries! Sahibzada Farhan Draws Level With Chris Gayle
Farhan’s innings was the centrepiece of Pakistan’s batting. He reached his fifty in 32 balls, continued to accelerate despite wickets tumbling at the other end, and completed his century off 60 balls, scoring five sixes and nine fours. In doing so, he became only the second batter in T20 World Cup history to score two centuries in a single edition, joining Chris Gayle in that exclusive company.
The openerโs century also pushed his tournament run tally past Virat Kohli’s record of 319 runs set in 2014, making him the highest run-scorer in a single T20 World Cup edition. Farhan was eventually dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka, who also removed Shaheen Afridi two balls later.
After Zaman’s dismissal, Pakistan collapsed dramatically, losing eight wickets for just 34 runs in less than five overs. Shadab Khan was run out going for a non-existent second run. Mohammad Nawaz fell for a first-ball duck. Salman Agha lasted just two balls. Madushanka claimed three wickets to haul Sri Lanka back. Pakistan finished on 212/8, a strong total, but the damage done by the late collapse meant the required 64-run winning margin was always going to be difficult to achieve.

Abrar Ahmed Rattles Sri Lanka’s Middle Order
Pakistan’s bowlers had a job to do, and Abrar Ahmed led the charge. Sri Lanka were restricted to 49/2 in the powerplay after Naseem Shah, returning to the playing XI, had Pathum Nissanka mishit a slower ball to extra cover in the second over.
Abrar then took control of the middle overs. He bowled Kamil Mishara with an off-break that came back into the left-hander, then beat Charith Asalanka as he went for a slog sweep and pinged the stumps, and finally dismissed Kamindu Mendis with a delivery that stayed low. His final figures of 3/23 were exceptional. Sri Lanka, at one stage, were 101/5, deep in trouble and seemingly nowhere near 148.
31 Balls of Chaos: Shanaka Almost Pulls Off the Impossible
What happened next made the match one of the most dramatic of the tournament. Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s captain, whose team was already eliminated, walked in and played an innings of extraordinary violence and timing. He and Pavan Rathnayake added 61 runs for the sixth wicket to bring Sri Lanka back into the match.
Rathnayake contributed 58 runs. But it was Shanaka who made the final over unforgettable. Facing Shaheen Afridi in the 20th over with Sri Lanka needing 28 runs, Shanaka hit the first ball for four, then smashed three consecutive sixes, over extra cover, over deep square leg, and over covers. Sri Lanka needed six runs off the last two balls. Shanaka missed the fifth ball, a low full toss. The sixth was a wide yorker outside off. He couldn’t connect. Pakistan won by five runs. Sri Lanka finished on 207/6.
Sri Lanka crossed 148, the threshold that officially ended Pakistan’s semi-final hopes, on the fifth ball of the 16th over, before the final-over drama had even begun.
New Zealand Advance to T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Finals
New Zealand’s progression was confirmed by Pakistan’s inability to win by the required margin. The Kiwis held a net run rate of +1.390 entering the match, compared to Pakistan’s -0.461, a gulf that made the task monumental from the outset. England had already secured the top spot in Group 2. New Zealand claim the second semi-final berth.
Pakistan’s elimination also carries off-field consequences. Reports indicate that Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi is unhappy with the team’s campaign, and captain Salman Agha, who marked his 50th game as Pakistan captain in this match, is expected to be replaced regardless of the result. Several senior players are also reportedly facing reassessment.
Pakistan Exit With Records in the Book and Regrets in the Air
The 2026 campaign will be remembered for Farhan’s brilliance, two centuries, a tournament run-scoring record that surpassed Kohli’s mark of 319, and for the tactical and structural failures that surrounded it. The opening partnership against Sri Lanka was the best Pakistan produced all tournament. The collapse that followed was not unfamiliar.
For Sri Lanka, Shanaka’s 76 not out off 31 balls stands as one of the great consolation innings in World Cup cricket. It came in a match that meant nothing to them in the standings, but everything to Pakistan.
Pallekele delivered a five-run result. The numbers behind it were far less close.
