South African Women Claim Another Thriller in Women’s World Cup 2025

women's world cup 2025 ban w vs sa w

In the Women’s World Cup 2025, I saw South Africa pull off another edge-of-your-seat thriller. Chasing a target of 233 set by Bangladesh, the South African women scrambled home with just three balls to spare.

Likewise, All-rounder Nadine de Klerk calmly finished the chase with a boundary and a six in the final over, guiding the Proteas to a three-wicket win.

It was a classic see-saw encounter: Bangladesh’s fearless teenager Shorna Akter blazed an unbeaten 51 off 34 balls to lift her side to 232/6. But when South Africa slumped to 78/5, I felt like I was watching a Hollywood comeback.

Marizanne Kapp (56) and Chloe Tryon (62) then steadied the ship with an 85-run stand for the sixth wicket.

BAN W vs SA W: Dramatic Battle at Women’s World Cup 2025

Bangladesh Women (BAN W) chose to bat, and they posted a challenging 232/6. Similarly, I also saw that they were cautious initially, they took 16 overs to reach 50 and the openers were not in a hurry.

Similarly, Sharmin Akhter anchored the innings with 50, and skipper Nigar Sultana chipped in 32, setting the stage. But once Shorna Akter unleashed a flurry of sixes and fours (51* off 34), the total became formidable.

Moreover, their spinners, especially Nahida Akter, struck early by uprooting Laura Wolvaardt for a duck, putting SA on the back foot. As I watched, Bangladesh seemed poised for a big upset.

They had pushed SA to 78/5 by the 23rd over thanks to smart leg-spin bowling by Rabeya Khan and Fahima Khatun. The scoreboard read like a mountain SA had to climb.

Key Match Stats:

  • Bangladesh Women: 232/6 (Shorna Akter 51*, Sharmin Akter 50)
  • South Africa Women: 235/7 (Chloe Tryon 62, Marizanne Kapp 56, Nadine de Klerk 37*)
  • Toss: Bangladesh batted first
  • Result: SA Women won by 3 wickets with 3 balls remaining
  • Player of the Match: Chloe Tryon (62) for her calming presence during the chase

BAN W vs SA W Epic SA Chase – I Was on the Edge

South Africa’s chase was full of tension. Early breakthroughs by Nahida Akter (Bangladesh) had me biting my lip as Tazmin Brits fell for a duck.

Likewise, a chaotic mix-up led to Wolvaardt’s run-out on the same ball, and Anneke Bosch departed soon after. Suddenly it was 78/5 – the Proteas looked dead in the water. But Kapp and Tryon, veterans of many battles, showed nerves of steel.

“We stayed calm,” Tryon later reflected after they stitched together that crucial partnership. Similarly, it felt like watching a thriller movie scene. Each boundary they scored lifted the momentum.

By the time Kapp was caught at long-off in the 41st over, I could sense the tide had turned. Tryon’s clean sweep brought an RBI single, and then a misfield off the next ball sent her scampering for an unlikely second run – even I wasn’t sure she’d get it, but she did.

De Klerk then took centre stage. I could feel the stadium pulse as she stepped up to bat. Moreover, Six runs were needed off the last over.

Bangladesh spilled a catch on her early in that over – a life that proved decisive. With 8 required from 6 balls, de Klerk calmly drilled a four, then a six, and SA was home.

It was the stuff of legends. The Proteas bench erupted. At that moment I thought, “This is what World Cup cricket is all about.” The chase was complete at 235/7 in 49.3 overs, and the crowd went wild.

Implications and Amit Mishra’s Takeaway

This win was South Africa’s third straight in four games, and it lifted them up the standings to third place. Personally, I felt it showed their maturity under pressure.

Bangladesh, despite losing, announced themselves as spunky competitors, with Shorna’s innings under lights. The victory had a big swing on the points table – SA leapfrogged co-host India to move into the top three.

From a journalist’s seat, I can say the match had everything: collapse and resurgence, heartbreak and triumph. Likewise, it reaffirmed that at the Women’s World Cup 2025, no result is settled until the last ball is bowled.

Looking ahead, South Africa now faces Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh must regroup to face Australia. Additionally, I am thrilled about the story being told – the life of SA in contrast to the terror of the young uneasy talent in Bangladesh generates a bright plot.

Personally, I think this win will boost the Proteas’ confidence. They have shown they can handle dizzy pressure like gladiators in a colosseum.

This thriller was more than a result; it was a statement that South African women’s cricket is a force to reckon with in this tournament.
