Sana Mir Finally Speaks After Her Remark on Women’s World Cup

ICC Women World Cup 2025 has not been short of headlines covering the performance on the field and controversies off the field. Sana Mir, a former Pakistan women team captain, has finally spoken up after her Azad Kashmir remark during the commentaries which had caused a frenzy.

The incident took place in the Pakistan vs Bangladesh match in Colombo when Mir addressed batter Natalia Pervaiz as belonging to Kashmir but then corrected herself to Azad Kashmir.

The politically charged comment was instantly viral, and fans were calling upon the ICC to take action. Mir has since made a clarification, asking people to stop politicising her words.

The Remark That Sparked a Storm

In the live broadcast, Sana Mir presented Pakistan batter Natalia Pervaiz by mentioning that she is a Pakistani born in Kashmir, and corrected it by saying Azad Kashmir.

The slip caused a commotion on social media, as fans added tags to the ICC and even chairman Jay Shah, requesting her to step out of the commentary panel.

The scandal erupted only days ahead of the high voltage India vs Pakistan match, and this created more tension in an already tense tournament environment.

Many considered that this comment by Mir was politically charged, and critics were accusing her of bringing geopolitics to cricket.

The video has gone quickly viral on social media, raising questions as to whether commentators should be disciplined against making politically sensitive utterances during international shows.

ICC has yet to respond officially, however, demands of an inquiry are already on the increase.

Sana Mir Clarification

In reaction to the criticism,Women’s World Cup star Sana Mir went to social media to clarify her stance. In a lengthy post she pointed out that it was not a political agenda, but merely to focus on the plight of players in remote areas such as Bandala in Bhimber District, where Pervaiz was born.

Mir wrote,”It is part of the storytelling we do as commentators, as to where the players come from. I did that today for two other players coming from other regions, too. Please don’t politicise it. As a commentator on the World Feed, we are meant to focus on the sport, teams, and players, highlighting inspiring stories of grit and perseverance. There is no malice in my heart or any intention to hurt sentiment.”

It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion and people in sports are being subjected to unnecessary pressure. It is sad that this requires an explanation at public level.

She also said that narration about the stories of players is one of the most important elements of commentary and that she has also narrated stories of players in other areas. She even provided a screenshot of her research notes just to support her explanation, indicating that she had used player profiles that are found online.

Mir ended her talk by encouraging fans to pay attention to the players and to their inspirational stories rather than to politicising commentary.

Amit Mishra’s Take

The timing of Sana Mir clarification is sensitive and her explanation could have been authentic but the choice of words during a global television broadcast could not go without questions. Cricket is a game that has always been associated with politics and passion, particularly in the subcontinent.

Mir is one of the most respected cricketers in Pakistan and her legacy as a pioneer in women’s cricket and contribution to the Women’s World Cup should not be diminished by this incident. With that said, commentators should be aware that their statements carry weight during international tournaments.

It is hoped that this controversy dies down sooner or later and the Women World Cup can shine because of the performances on the field and not the controversies off the field.
