South Africa Beat India by 76 Runs in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights Match - main

India’s remarkable 12-match winning streak at the T20 World Cups came to a brutal end after a ruthless defeat from South Africa by 76 runs in the Super Eights Group 1 opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, South Africa were rocked early but recovered brilliantly to post 187 for 7 in 20 overs. India, chasing 188, were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.

The Proteas delivered one of the most complete performances of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and a significant early statement in the Super Eights stage.

Bumrah Creates History, But India Falls Short

Jasprit Bumrah came out firing. Inside four overs, he had removed Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton to leave South Africa in tatters at 20/3. Arshdeep Singh chipped in, and India’s bowlers looked firmly in control.

Bumrah finished with 3/15 in his four overs, a brilliant spell that marked him as India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup cricket with 33 wickets, surpassing R Ashwin’s tally of 32.

Despite his contribution with the ball, the Bumrah-Arshdeep partnership could not compensate for a batting order that never found its footing. India’s powerplay of 31 for 3 set the tone for a chase that was always going to be an uphill task.

David Miller and Dewald Brevis Rescue The Proteas

South Africa looked in serious trouble in the first four overs. Then David Miller walked in and changed everything. He struck 63 off just 35 balls, and alongside the electric Dewald Brevis, who made 45 off 29. The two put on a 97-run fourth-wicket partnership from only 51 balls. That partnership is now South Africa’s highest for the fourth wicket in Men’s T20 World Cup history, breaking the previous record of 76 set by JP Duminy and AB de Villiers.

Tristan Stubbs then came in and blasted an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls to push South Africa to 187/7 in 20 overs, a total that would prove well beyond India’s reach. Arshdeep Singh finished with 2/28 in his four overs, while Bumrah’s three wickets kept the damage under control at the death.

Chasing 188, India needed a measured start. Captain Markram opened the bowling himself and removed Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over, caught at extra cover. Two balls later, Marco Jansen had Tilak Varma caught behind to leave India reeling at 5/2. The hosts never truly recovered.

Abhishek Sharma, who had recorded three successive ducks in the tournament before this game, finally got off the mark and made 15, but Jansen dismissed him too. Washington Sundar made 11, and captain Suryakumar Yadav scratched his way to 18 off 22 balls before falling to Corbin Bosch, who took two wickets for just 12 runs. India were 51/5 after fewer than 10 overs, and the game was effectively over.

Shivam Dube provided brief resistance, top-scoring with 42, and Hardik Pandya contributed before Keshav Maharaj removed him and Rinku Singh in consecutive balls. Jansen wrapped things up with a four-wicket haul of 4/22, the standout bowling performance of the match. Maharaj took 3/24 and Lungi Ngidi, though wicketless, was equally destructive with the ball, conceding only 15 runs from his full four-over quota. India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, losing by 76 runs.

Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj: The Bowling Stars

While Miller earned the individual award, the bowling unit deserves equal recognition. Jansen was the pick of the bowlers, his ability to move the ball both ways in the powerplay and come back at the death with 4/22 was decisive. Maharaj’s three wickets in the middle overs, including back-to-back dismissals of Pandya and Rinku Singh, deflated any remaining Indian hopes of a recovery. Bosch and Ngidi did the supporting work with quiet, suffocating efficiency.

The Proteas’ bowlers delivered a flawless performance. Jansen, Maharaj, Bosch, and Ngidi each played their part in dismantling India’s batting lineup from the first over to the last.

What This Means for Both Teams in the Super Eights

The defeat drops India to the bottom of Super Eights Group 1 with a net run rate of -3.80. With West Indies and Zimbabwe also in the group, India must win both remaining matches to secure a semi-final berth.

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain, acknowledged that the batting unit underperformed. He pointed to excess wicket loss in the powerplay as the key problem, a theme that had haunted India’s chase from the opening over.

South Africa, meanwhile, sits at the top of the group unbeaten and in full control of their knockout destiny. South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram led from the front in every phase of the match, calling the toss right, opening the bowling himself, and watching his team execute a tactical masterclass.

The result is a direct repeat of the two sides meeting in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where India prevailed. In 2026, South Africa settled the score in the most convincing way possible.
