Sri Lanka Still Has Hope, Bangladesh Out of Women’s World Cup 2025 Playoff Race

The Women’s World Cup 2025 has produced its share of thrillers, but nothing prepared me for the night of October 20. In a game where one over changed everything, the SL W vs BAN W match had Sri Lanka come back strong to protect 203 runs and keep their dreams alive.

I watched in disbelief as Bangladesh crumbled in the final over – a collapse that confirmed they were out of the playoff race. In contrast, Sri Lanka’s slim hopes flicker on, even with South Africa and England already in the semi-finals.

Women’s World Cup 2025 Showdown – SL W vs BAN W & SA W vs BAN W Live Score Recap

The SL W vs BAN W game in Navi Mumbai showed that cricket can be as surprising as a sudden rainstorm. Sri Lanka fell to 202 after a big drop in their score during the game.

The opener, Hasini Perera, got her first ODI fifty of 85 runs off 99 balls and the captain Chamari Athapaththu made an easy 46 to enable the team to remain in the game. When Bangladesh began their chase, I felt the game would drift away; the SA W vs BAN W live score from earlier in the tournament suggested Bangladesh could chase 232 with ease.

Yet Bangladesh’s chase was cautious. Nigar Sultana Joty anchored with 77 off 98 balls while Sharmin Akhter compiled an unbeaten 64.

With nine needed off the last over, the match looked done and dusted. But this is why we love cricket.

Athapaththu took the ball and conjured four wickets in four balls – an lbw, a run-out, a catch at long-off, and another lbw – conceding just a single run. Bangladesh went from 194-4 to 195-9, finishing at 195/9 and losing by seven runs.

I could almost hear the Sri Lankan dug-out erupt. The win not only gave them their first points but also pushed Bangladesh out of the tournament.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 202 in 48.4 overs. Shorna Akter’s double strike triggered a collapse as wickets tumbled from 174-5 to 202 all out. Bangladesh’s chase looked comfortable until the final over. Their batting card:

Bangladesh reached 195/9 in 50 overs. Those final four balls turned the “SL W vs BAN W” thriller into a heartbreaker for Nigar Sultana’s side.

She later admitted they “kept losing wickets at crucial times,” and her fighting 77 went in vain.

SA W vs BAN W Live Score: South Africa Finish the Job

Earlier in the tournament, the SA W vs BAN W live score from Visakhapatnam hinted at Bangladesh’s fragility. Bangladesh posted 232/6 thanks to Fargana Hoque’s 30, Rubya Haider’s 25, Sharmin Akhter’s 50 and an explosive 51* from Shorna Akter.

South Africa’s spinners responded; Nonkululeko Mlaba’s 2-42 and Chloe Tryon’s 1-41 kept them in check. South Africa made a shaky start at 64/4 but Marizanne Kapp (56 off 71), Chloe Tryon (62 off 69) and Nadine de Klerk (37* off 29) ensured they chased 235/7 with three balls to spare.

Bangladesh fielders dropped catches at key moments, and Nadine de Klerk sealed the win with a six off the final over. This result, combined with the SL W vs BAN W defeat, effectively ended Bangladesh’s playoff hopes.

Women’s World Cup 2025 Standings – Sri Lanka’s Slim Hope After SL W vs BAN W and SA W vs BAN W Live Score

With Australia, South Africa and England already safely through, the last semi-final spot hinges on net run rate and remaining matches. Sri Lanka’s dramatic win lifted them to four points and sixth on the table.

They now need to beat Pakistan and hope New Zealand and India falter. As I write this, the SA W vs BAN W live score and SL W vs BAN W results loom large; Bangladesh’s fifth defeat officially knocks them out, leaving them playing for pride.

Sri Lanka still have work to do. Their batting still looks fragile; six wickets fell for 28 runs against Bangladesh, and dropped catches nearly cost them.

Yet the grit they showed – Athapaththu’s calm final over and Hasini Perera’s milestone knock – tells me they’re not giving up. In a tournament defined by spin and low totals, teams that hold their nerve in the clutch overs will progress.

Sri Lanka, buoyed by the “SL W vs BAN W” miracle, need another near-perfect performance.

FAQs

What took place in the SL W vs BAN W game in the Women’s World Cup 2025?

Hasini Perera scored 85 and Chamari Athapaththu got 46, helping Sri Lanka get to 202. Bangladesh needed nine runs in the last over after getting to 195/9, but Athapaththu took three wickets and caused a run-out to win by seven runs.

How did the live score of SA W vs BAN W affect the Women’s World Cup 2025 rankings?

Bangladesh lost to South Africa before, so they had very little chance going into the game against Sri Lanka. South Africa went after 235 runs in Visakhapatnam after Bangladesh scored 232 runs. This loss means Bangladesh must win all their next games. They lost to Sri Lanka, and that ended their chance to stay in the game.

Who played really well for Sri Lanka in the SL W vs BAN W game?

Hasini Perera scored her first fifty in ODIs, with both bat and ball Athapaththu scored 46 runs and 4 wickets in 42 runs. This was very important. Nilakshika Silva scored 37 runs, and Sugandika Kumari bowled well, taking 2 wickets for 38 runs.

Did Bangladesh get out of the Women’s World Cup 2025 after losing to SL W and SA W?

Sure. Bangladesh lost to South Africa by three wickets and then missed winning against Sri Lanka by seven runs. These losses, along with past defeats, mean they cannot get to the semi-finals.
