These shows made his name known to selectors, and he made his ODI debut in November 2025. Rathnayake had to fight to get noticed before he could even be seen in domestic cricket, and there was tough competition.

His first appearance at the first-class level was in 2019 with Sri Lanka Police Sports Club, and he was also a steady top-order batsman. His ability to play long, match-defining innings can be seen in more than 3,700 first-class runs, 13 centuries, and 13 fifties, including a top score of 240.

The first steps in international cricket were taken by Pavan Rathnayake in late 2025, when he received his first chance to be involved with the Sri Lanka national team. On the 16th of November 2025 at Rawalpindi, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Pakistan, which saw him put forward his talent in a very composed way in the senior international setting. Also on the 25th of November 2025, he played his first T20 International match against Zimbabwe, which was the early step in his journey in all forms of limited-overs cricket.

His early international appearances were small, but Rathnayake exhibited indications of the sort of quality that had made him a star in domestic cricket. Such early games helped him get comfortable with the team and learn from more senior players.

Maiden ODI Century vs England

Rathnayake made his mark on the world stage on 27 January 2026 in the 3rd ODI against England at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Hunting a difficult target, he made a grown-up and well-timed innings and got his first ODI century: 121 off 115. His innings were characterized by the combination of well-timed boundaries, quick turn of strike, and the possibility to stabilize the innings in the case when wickets were falling at the other end.

Although Sri Lanka lost by 53 runs, Rathnayake’s century was highlighted as the match’s individual performance. This was a knock he had earned only in his fourth ODI, and it showed his temperament, technique, and knack for performing under pressure. It left a strong impression that he was one of the bright young batters on the international scene in Sri Lanka.

What Makes Pavan a Batter to Watch?

Pavan Rathnayake is technically strong, well balanced, patient, and can build innings under pressure, and is a right handed hitter. His ODI maiden hundred against England proved that he was calm and flexible in handling pace and spin with much comfort and stabilized the innings when wickets were smashing down. He can also bowl the right-arm off-break every now and then, which is a variation for the team, as he is more of a batter.

His performance at home is great, yet Rathnayake must improve his consistency in white-ball international cricket and raise his fielding standards to a modern level. He is gaining experience against the best teams, including England, and, with his talent and mental strength, he is evolving into a dependable top or middle-order player for Sri Lanka in the future.

Rathnayake’s Bright Future in International Cricket

Pavan Rathnayake is 23 years old, but he will one day become a valuable asset to Sri Lanka’s batting line in all forms. Good performances in domestic cricket, his first success in international cricket, and his first ODI century against England prove that he can play at the highest level and has the skill and mental ability.

He can also be part of future Sri Lankan tournaments, provided he keeps scoring runs and adjusts to new circumstances. Pavan Rathnayake, too, participated in the Pakistan Tri-Series and took 2 wickets in the final, indicating he can also play in T20 cricket, although Sri Lanka lost the series.

His calmness, focus, and talent make him one of the most exciting young players in Sri Lanka. As a more seasoned player, he will be a valuable and reliable addition to the national team in a few years.
