Virat Kohli Drinking Water Price Per Litre – Why Is It So Expensive

Virat Kohli drinks water that costs ₹4,000 per litre. That number surprises most people. A regular one-litre Bisleri bottle costs around ₹20. For the same amount of water, Kohli pays 200 times more. The brand is Evian Natural Spring Water, imported from France. It comes in glass bottles, sits on premium shelves, and gets delivered to his home in Mumbai. This choice of water has led to discussions about the lifestyles of athletes, the importance of staying hydrated, and whether spending lakhs on water every year is worth it.

He said that within a few months, he felt lighter, recovered faster, and had more energy during long Test matches. He now eats quinoa, tofu, lentils, green vegetables, and shakes with a lot of protein in them.  Evian fits into that plan because of where it comes from and what it contains.

What Is Evian Water?

Evian comes from Évian-les-Bains, a town in the French Alps near Lake Geneva. The water starts as rain and snow that falls on the mountains. It filters naturally through glacial rocks and sand for 15 years before reaching the spring. During that time, the water picks up minerals like calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates. No chemicals get added. No artificial processes happen. The water gets bottled directly at the source.

The mineral composition matters for athletes. Calcium helps bones stay healthy, and muscles contract. Magnesium helps your body make energy and stops cramps. Bicarbonates help with metabolism and keep the pH level stable. Most of these minerals are lost during the treatment of regular tap water or RO water. Evian keeps them natural.

The pH level is about 7.2, which is almost neutral. That is the same as the body’s natural pH, which helps with hydration. When athletes sweat, they lose electrolytes. Drinking mineral-rich water helps them get back to normal faster than drinking plain water.

Why Evian Water So Expensive?

The ₹4,000 number is right, but it needs some context. The price changes depending on where you buy it. Evian bottles on Amazon India cost between ₹600 and ₹1,200 per liter.

Specialty stores and hotel suppliers charge more, sometimes as much as ₹4,200 per liter for high-end packaging. Import duties, shipping costs, and the markups that resellers add to the price all make it go up.

If Kohli drinks two liters a day, which is normal for an athlete of his size, it costs about ₹4 to ₹4.5 lakhs a year. That is based on the average price of ₹600 for a bottle bought in bulk or through a subscription. For most people, that much money could pay for rent for months. Kohli makes a lot of money from cricket contracts, endorsements, and business ventures, over ₹200 crores a year. So this is just a small part of his income.

The glass bottles add to the cost. Evian uses recyclable glass to preserve mineral content and avoid plastic contamination. Glass is heavier, more fragile, and expensive to ship internationally. That alone increases the retail price compared to plastic-bottled brands.

Protected Source and Natural Filtration

The cost comes down to a few factors. First, the source is safe. The French government keeps the Évian-les-Bains area clean and free of pollution by making rules about it. Companies can’t just put up bottling plants anywhere they want. Evian has exclusive access to that spring, and maintaining that access costs money.

The filtration process takes 15 years. Most bottled water brands use artificial filtration systems that take hours or days. Evian relies on natural geology. That time adds perceived value but also limits supply. You can’t speed up nature.

Import Costs Hit Hard in India

Import logistics drive prices up significantly. Customs duties on imported food and beverages range between 30% and 40%. Add shipping from Europe, cold chain storage, and distributor margins, and the price doubles or triples by the time it reaches Indian shelves.

Luxury Branding Effect

Luxury branding plays a major role. Evian markets itself as premium. Celebrities like Beyoncé and Gigi Hadid drink it. High-end hotels stock it. Fashion shows serve it backstage. That association with wealth and status allows the brand to charge more, and buyers pay for the name as much as the water.

Kohli’s Diet and Hydration Context

Kohli gave up meat in 2018. He had struggled with a cervical spine issue and wanted to reduce inflammation. His nutritionist suggested a plant-based diet. He said that within a few months, he felt lighter, recovered faster, and had more energy during long Test matches. He now eats quinoa, tofu, lentils, green vegetables, and shakes with a lot of protein in them. Hydration became more important after the diet change because plant-based foods contain less sodium than meat, which affects water retention.

Anushka Sharma, his wife, follows a similar routine. She also drinks Evian and focuses on clean eating. Their home kitchen avoids processed foods, refined sugar, and anything with artificial additives. Water fits into that philosophy. If everything else they consume is carefully sourced and minimally processed, the water has to match.

Kohli trains six days a week. His routine includes weight training, cardio, yoga, and cricket practice. A session can last three to four hours. During that time, he loses water through sweat, and replacing it with mineral-rich water helps his muscles recover. Regular water works for hydration, but it doesn’t replenish lost electrolytes the way mineral water does.

While Kohli has built a reputation for discipline and elite performance, other Indian cricketers have also set benchmarks in their careers. Rohit Sharma reflect a different but equally impressive approach to fitness and consistency at the international level.

Evian vs Other Premium Waters

Evian is not the only expensive water available in India. Voss, a Norwegian brand, costs between ₹500 and ₹800 per litre. It comes in cylindrical glass bottles and markets itself as ultra-pure artesian water. Perrier, a French sparkling water, costs around ₹400 to ₹600 per litre. San Pellegrino, an Italian brand, is priced similarly.

Compared to these, Evian sits at the higher end. The difference lies in the mineral profile. Evian has more calcium and magnesium than Voss. Perrier and San Pellegrino are carbonated, which some athletes avoid because it can cause bloating. Evian is still naturally mineralized and has a neutral pH, making it the preferred choice for serious athletes.

Bisleri, India’s top-selling bottled water, costs ₹20 per litre. It’s filtered tap water with minimal minerals. Kinley and Aquafina are similar. RO water at home is even cheaper, but strips out almost all minerals during reverse osmosis. For everyday hydration, these options work fine. For someone like Kohli, who monitors every aspect of his intake, they don’t offer enough.

Myth Busting: Black Water Confusion

There has been confusion about whether Kohli drinks black water. Black water is a different product. It’s alkaline water infused with minerals like fulvic acid, giving it a dark color. Brands like Evocus sell black water in India, priced around ₹100 to ₹150 per litre. Some reports mistakenly linked Kohli to black water because of his focus on wellness.

Kohli drinks Evian, which is clear. The confusion likely started because both are premium hydration products. Virat Kohli’s black water discussions online often mix up the two, but Evian has been his consistent choice for years.

Is It Worth ₹4,000?

Yes, for an elite athlete. Kohli makes enough money that ₹4 lakhs a year for water is not a big deal. The minerals help him heal, the pH balance works with his metabolism, and the purity fits with his dietary philosophy. Performance at his level depends on marginal gains. If better hydration gives him a 1% edge, it’s worth the cost.

For an average person, probably not. There are real but small health benefits to drinking Evian instead of regular filtered water. It’s hard to justify spending ₹4,000 per liter unless you’re training at a professional level or have certain health problems that need extra minerals. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and clean tap water will serve most people just fine.

The real value of Evian for Kohli is consistency. He knows exactly what minerals he’s getting, the water tastes the same every time, and there’s no risk of contamination. That reliability matters when every variable in your diet affects performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.How much does Virat Kohli spend on water annually?

If Kohli drinks around two litres daily, which most athletes his size do, the yearly cost comes to somewhere between ₹4 and ₹4.5 lakhs. That’s calculated at roughly ₹600 per litre when buying in bulk or through subscription services.

2.Where can I buy Evian water in India?

You can find Evian on Amazon India, at specialty grocery stores, and in premium supermarkets across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and other major cities. Prices vary a lot. Some sellers list it at ₹600 per litre, while others go up to ₹4,200 depending on packaging and where you’re buying from.

3.What minerals are in Evian water?

Evian has calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates, potassium, sodium, and chloride. Calcium helps with bones and muscle movement. Magnesium supports energy production. Bicarbonates keep your body’s pH balanced. These minerals matter more for people who sweat a lot during training.

4.Is premium water better than RO water?

For everyday use, RO water works fine. It’s clean and safe. But RO filtration strips out most minerals. Premium water like Evian keeps those minerals naturally. Athletes benefit from that because they lose electrolytes through sweat and need to replace them. For regular hydration at home, RO water does the job.

5.Does Anushka Sharma drink expensive water too?

Yes, she does. Anushka has talked about using Evian as part of her wellness and skincare routine. The couple shares similar habits when it comes to diet and hydration.
