Dan Lategan and Jake Libby both scored centuries to power Worcestershire Men to a historic eight-wicket victory over Gloucestershire Men. The match took place on 23 August 2026, at Cheltenham College.
The opening pair put on a massive 244-run partnership to chase down a target of 279 runs. Worcestershire won and climbed to fourth place on the final day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match.
Earlier in the day, Gloucestershire finished their second innings on 395-7 to set up the run chase. However, Lategan’s 144 runs and Libby’s unbeaten 107 runs helped Worcestershire reach the target with 4.5 overs to spare.
The Record-Breaking Opening Partnership of Lategan and Libby
Dan Lategan and Jake Libby scored a massive opening stand of 244 runs to destroy the Gloucestershire bowling attack. Lategan survived a major scare on his very first ball of the innings. Indian spinner Sai Kishore bowled a nice delivery, and Lategan edged the ball to short leg. However, Gloucestershire fielder Boorman dropped a very sharp catch. Consequently, Lategan made the home team pay heavily for their early mistake.
The young left-handed batter scored the first 50 runs of the partnership in 12 overs with Libby. In addition, Lategan drove Kishore for a massive six over wide long-on to reach his personal half-century off just 48 balls. The visitors reached a comfortable 110-0 at the tea break to put pressure on Gloucestershire.

How Dan Lategan Smashed His Maiden Century
Lategan continued his attack after the tea break. He surpassed his previous career-best score of 89 runs, which he made against Derbyshire in May. The 20-year-old South African eventually reached his maiden first-class century by pulling Ollie Price to the boundary.
He eventually scored 144 runs from 163 balls, which included five sixes and 17 fours. Lategan fell with Worcestershire still needing 35 runs for victory. Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson praised the young player for learning quickly and batting beautifully.
In a post-match interview, Lategan reflected on his maiden Pears century saying that it was an amazing feeling.
Jake Libby Anchors the Chase to the End
While Lategan attacked the bowlers, Jake Libby played a calm and controlled innings. He scored his century off 136 balls, hitting a boundary off Miles Hammond to celebrate. He scored 107 not out off 140 balls to finish the match.
Beyers Swanepoel joined Libby in the middle to complete the chase. Swanepoel scored a quick 22 runs from 16 balls to bring his team closer to the target. He hit a massive six and two fours during his short stay. However, Ed Middleton caught Swanepoel off his own leg-spin bowling with only a few runs left to win.
Consequently, Adam Hose walked out to join Libby. Hose drove Ed Middleton through extra cover for a beautiful four to seal the victory. Gloucestershire suffered their eighth defeat in nine matches. They remain at the bottom of the Division Two table.

What This Win Means for the County Championship Division Two Table
Consequently, Worcestershire received 20 points for this magnificent victory. They now sit in fourth place in the Division Two table with 115 points. In addition, the team is building massive confidence for the rest of the season. Their next match is a home date against Lancashire on Thursday.
In contrast, Gloucestershire received only 3 points from the match. This result leaves them at the bottom of the table with just 41 points. They must quickly travel to Durham for their next game on Thursday.
