London Spirit beat Welsh Fire by six runs in Match 31 of The Hundred Men’s Competition at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on August 12. David Willey took three wickets for 20 runs and held two catches, and the left-arm seamer walked away with the Player of the Match award. Spirit defended a modest 131 for 8, restricting Fire to 125 for 7 in a contest that swung late.
Welsh Fire’s qualification hopes rested on numbers alone before the game began. Four tight wins and three heavy losses had left their net run rate in poor shape, and only a record margin of victory would have carried them through. They chose to bowl first, a decision that effectively conceded the group stage before a ball was bowled.
Spirit Struggle to Build Momentum
Chris Woakes set the tone early, containing Jonny Bairstow and Lhuan-dre Pretorius at the top of the innings. Spirit reached 34 for 1 from the opening powerplay, and Lockie Ferguson struck soon after, removing Pretorius. Woakes then had Bairstow caught for 34 off just 19 balls, and Marco Jansen squeezed the innings further, bowling ten dot balls inside his first 15 deliveries.
Liam Livingstone and Dewald Brevis, the tournament’s leading run-scorers for Spirit, both fell cheaply. James Coles pushed the innings along with 29 before Jansen leapt at long-on and flicked the ball back for Tom Kohler-Cadmore to complete the catch. Jamie Overton added a late flourish with 21 off 11 balls, but Spirit closed on 131 for 8 from their 100 balls, a total that looked light against the conditions at Sophia Gardens.
Fire Cruise Before Losing Their Way
Fire’s chase began smoothly. They lost Matthew Short in the very first over, but Phil Salt and Joe Root settled the innings, moving to 90 for 2 off 69 balls with wickets in hand. Jordan Cox looked in fluent touch, and the equation appeared firmly under control. Root fell for 31 off 31 balls, and Cox followed for 44 off 28, and the required rate began climbing sharply from that point.

Overton bowled a tight 18th over, conceding just one run and leaving Fire needing 16 from 10 balls. Adam Milne then struck twice in consecutive deliveries, removing Cox and Kohler-Cadmore, and the match tilted decisively toward Spirit.

Willey Seals a Tense Finish
Rachin Ravindra chipped a simple return catch to Willey, leaving Fire needing 14 off the final three balls. Woakes launched the first ball of the last over over long-off for six, cutting the gap further, but he could only manage a single off the next delivery. Jansen swung at the final ball and picked out Overton on the deep midwicket boundary, ending the chase six runs short.
Willey’s figures of 3 for 20 from his four overs proved the difference on the day. Spirit finished the group stage with a morale-boosting win, while Fire’s campaign ends in the same position their net run rate had already decided weeks earlier. The result confirmed London Spirit’s seventh victory of the season and closed out a low-scoring but tightly fought contest at Sophia Gardens.
