Europe Set for Its Own International Cricket Tournament in 2027

Europe Set to Host Its Own Cricket Tournament in 2027

Cricket in Europe may be on the verge of a significant structural change. Plans are advancing for a dedicated continental tournament, tentatively called the Euro Nations Cup, that could launch as early as the summer of 2027.

The concept has been championed by Cricket Ireland and is now moving beyond informal discussion toward something that looks increasingly likely to happen.

What Is Being Proposed

The Euro Nations Cup would bring together a handful of European cricket nations in an annual competition covering both the men’s and women’s game. The countries most likely to be involved are England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and possibly Italy. T20 is the preferred format, and an early summer slot has been identified as the most practical window in the calendar.

The tournament is modeled loosely on the Asia Cup, which has long served as a regional competition sitting alongside the global ICC calendar, giving Asian nations additional high-quality fixtures against each other. The Euro Nations Cup would attempt something similar for the European game, offering more competitive cricket to nations that currently have limited opportunities at international level.

Cricket Ireland chair Brian MacNeice has been the most vocal advocate for the idea. Speaking at a news conference on Friday, he said the concept has moved well past the early planning stages.

“The conversations have now developed and evolved to a point that I’m much more confident that it is going to happen,” he said. “I would anticipate that it will kick off in the summer of 2027, and the precise format and detail of it will be announced in due course.”

MacNeice added that further announcements are expected within months, indicating that key details around format and broadcast arrangements are being worked through now.

Ireland Pushing the Idea Forward

Cricket Ireland has been the driving force behind the proposal. MacNeice confirmed he raised the concept with officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board during England’s T20 tour to Ireland in September 2025 and has been building support among various stakeholders since.

“I’ve had this on the table for discussion with various stakeholders for quite some time,” MacNeice said. “It’s something that I’m very passionate about and that I fundamentally believe in.”

His confidence has grown noticeably over the past year. “This time last year, it was a fanciful idea. Now it’s something that’s progressing far more. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s heading very much in that direction.”

For Ireland, the tournament would serve a clear purpose. The Irish men’s team plays limited international cricket compared to the major Test nations, and a structured annual competition against European rivals would provide consistent high-profile fixtures, better preparation for global tournaments, and a platform to grow the domestic game commercially.

The ECB’s Position

England’s involvement is the central question surrounding the tournament’s viability. Their participation would increase the competition’s commercial and broadcasting appeal considerably. The ECB also has the venues and infrastructure that other European nations lack at international standard.

ECB officials have historically been cool toward proposals of this kind. The England men’s team plays a packed international schedule and adding a European competition requires carving out space in a calendar that is already heavily congested, with existing broadcasting and commercial arrangements adding further complications.

There are signs that attitudes may be shifting, though. Italy and Scotland both pushed England close at the recent T20 World Cup, demonstrating that European cricket is becoming more competitive. Encouragement from the International Cricket Council has also given the ECB reason to take the proposal more seriously.

England have already qualified for the 2028 T20 World Cup by reaching the Super 8s. A Euro Nations Cup could serve as a development platform for emerging players who need exposure to competitive international cricket without yet being part of the first-choice setup.

MacNeice was careful when asked directly whether the ECB would commit. “In principle it’s really easy to do,” he said. “There are practicalities of logistics and existing broadcasting and all that sort of stuff. That’s the complicated kind of piece that has to be pieced together.”

It is worth noting that ESPNcricinfo reported separately that the ECB has not been involved in recent discussions around the proposal, which points to a meaningful gap between Cricket Ireland’s ambitions and formal buy-in from England’s governing body.

What It Means for European Cricket

The Euro Nations Cup represents a broader ambition for cricket development across the continent. Europe has historically been a secondary market for the sport, with major competitions and commercial activity concentrated in South Asia, Australia, England, and the Caribbean.

A structured regional tournament would give European associate nations more visibility, more competitive experience, and potentially more leverage in ICC funding and development programs. For countries like the Netherlands, Scotland, and Italy, regular T20 cricket against England and Ireland would be a meaningful step up from what is currently available to them.

MacNeice framed the announcement as part of a wider push by Cricket Ireland to strengthen the international game in Europe. On the same day, Ireland announced long-term agreements with the Emirates Cricket Board and the Cricket Association of Nepal, covering regular white-ball series for their men’s team against both nations. Each ILT20 franchise will also be required to sign at least one Ireland player from the 2026-27 season onward.

The Euro Nations Cup is the most high-profile piece of that ambition. If it launches in 2027 with England involved, it would mark a genuine shift in how European cricket is organized. The details still need to be confirmed and England’s formal participation is not yet secured. But a year ago this was being described as a fanciful idea. It is not being described that way anymore.
