Mossadek Hossain returns with a bang for Bangladesh
Mossadek Hossain had not played international cricket since November 2022. He picked a good time to come back. The all-rounder was named Player of the Series as Bangladesh beat Australia 2-1, a result that ranks among the biggest in the team’s ODI history.
His comeback match set the tone. Mossadek scored an unbeaten 86, took two wickets and pulled off a sharp running catch in the opening ODI. Bangladesh won that game by 86 runs. It was only their second ODI win over Australia in 23 attempts, and their first in more than 20 years.
Mossadek carried that form through the series. He finished as Bangladesh’s top run-scorer with 157 runs across three matches, including two half-centuries. His bat and ball combined to shape a series win that few had predicted.
Nathan Smith leads New Zealand’s fightback in England
New Zealand lost the opening Test of their tour to England at Lord’s. They still won the series 2-1, and Nathan Smith had a lot to do with that.
The fast bowler took 16 wickets across the three Tests, the most of any player in the series, and walked away with the Player of the Series award despite the early defeat. His best spell came in that same Lord’s Test. He took three wickets in the first innings, then returned figures of 6 for 70 in the second.
New Zealand went into the series without several regular fast bowlers through injury. Smith stepped into that gap and led an inexperienced attack through two must-win Tests. New Zealand won both and sealed the series.
Shubman Gill dominates with the bat across formats
India captain Shubman Gill had a busy June, and he made most of it count. He opened the month with 126 in a one-off Test against Afghanistan, a knock that helped India win by an innings. It was his 11th Test century, built on 15 fours and a six, and it showed his usual strength through the off side.
Gill kept that form going in the ODI series that followed. He scored 238 runs across two innings. In the first ODI, he made 84 off 66 balls. In the second, played in Lucknow, he went on to score 154 off just 110 deliveries.
Cramps troubled him during that innings, but Gill pushed through and picked up another Player of the Match award. He also took home the Player of the Series title for his overall showing with the bat.
