Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 162 off 143 balls as West Indies chased down 352 and beat India by five wickets, with 10 balls remaining, in the third ODI at New Chandigarh on October 3. India won the series 2-1, while the result gave West Indies the highest successful chase in their ODI history.
Hope Anchors the West Indies Chase in New Chandigarh
John Campbell fell to Mohammed Siraj in the fifth over with the score at 41, and Hope then added 109 for the second wicket with Amir Jangoo. Jangoo made 67 off 56 balls before a run-out ended the stand, and he finished the series with 239 runs off 176 balls.
Hope reached fifty off 46 balls and his hundred off 104 balls, which was his 21st in ODIs. Among West Indies batters, only Chris Gayle has scored more. Hope battled fitness problems in the second half of the innings and went 42 balls without a boundary around the 38th over, when the asking rate crossed eight for the first time.
Sherfane Rutherford was given out caught behind for 24 on the field, and the third umpire upheld the decision because he could not see a clear gap between bat and ball. Keemo Paul then batted in the top five for the first time in ODIs and scored 44 off 35 balls in a 65-run stand with Hope. Hope hit a six off the first ball of Kuldeep Yadav’s last over and swept a wrong’un for four. He also took advantage when India bowled the final overs with an extra fielder inside the circle because of a slow over rate. Gudakesh Motie finished on 19 not out off 14 balls.
Rahul’s 129 and Rohit’s 92 Lift India to 351
India won the toss for the third time in the series and chose to bat. Jayden Seales dismissed Shubman Gill for 1 and Virat Kohli for 0 in successive legal deliveries, which left India at 4 for 2.

Rohit Sharma rebuilt the innings with 92 off 85 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes, and shared a 137-run stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad for the third wicket. Paul had Rohit caught by Jewel Andrew in the 25th over, eight runs short of a third hundred in four innings. Gaikwad scored 57 off 69 balls after West Indies dropped him four times, and Seales removed him in the 29th over.
KL Rahul finished unbeaten on 129 off 87 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. It was his ninth ODI hundred and his fourth in 36 innings at No. 5. He added 40 with debutant Anshul Kamboj and 61 with Gurnoor Brar, and he scored 42 off his last 12 balls as India collected 50 runs in the final three overs. Seales took 3 for 62 for West Indies.
Injuries, Dropped Catches and the Series Outcome
West Indies dropped at least six catches, and they also lost players to injury during the match. Andrew went to hospital for scans after he was hit by a catch from Naman Dhir, and the scans showed no fracture. The team decided he would bat only if needed, and he did not bat. Vitel Lawes left the field with an injury while bowling.
West Indies also played without Roston Chase, who made way for Motie. India played without Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, and Kamboj conceded 82 runs in nine overs on debut, including two no-balls.
West Indies had scored 405 earlier in the series and still lost that match. Hope won Player of the Match for his unbeaten 162, and Gill took Player of the Series for India.
