Punjab Kings moved to the top of the IPL 2026 standings after a commanding 7-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on April 16.
Chasing 196, PBKS knocked off the target in just 16.3 overs to stay unbeaten in five games. Arshdeep Singh strangled MI with the new ball, Prabhsimran Singh took the chase apart, and Shreyas Iyer made it look like a training session.
MI, meanwhile, slipped to their fourth consecutive defeat, a campaign that looks increasingly worrying.
Arshdeep Sets the Tone With Devastating New-Ball Spell
Punjab Kings elected to field first, and Arshdeep Singh made the decision look immediately smart. With two left-handed openers at the top for MI, conditions suited him perfectly. The ball swung and moved, and Arshdeep removed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav — both for single-digit scores — in just two overs to leave MI at 12 for 2. In the process, he also crossed 100 IPL wickets.
Arshdeep kept his spell tight throughout, finishing with 3 for 22 in 4 overs. He returned in the death to rattle Sherfane Rutherford’s stumps for just one run, ensuring MI’s lower order never got going. The Player of the Match award was not a surprise.
De Kock Lone Bright Spot in MI’s Innings
Despite the early collapse, MI had Quinton de Kock to thank for any respectability in the total. Playing his first match of the season after Rohit Sharma’s injury, de Kock was in a different class. He reached his fifty off 28 balls, brought up a hundred in the 17th over off 53 balls, and eventually finished 112 not out off 60 deliveries — his third IPL century, and the first to be scored for three different franchises.
Naman Dhir, promoted to number four, supported de Kock well, hitting 50 off 31 balls as the pair added 122 for the third wicket. But once Dhir was dismissed by Shashank Singh at 134 for 3 in the 14th over, the innings folded quickly. Only 61 came off the final seven overs as Arshdeep and Marco Jansen bowled accurate death yorkers. MI ended at 195 for 6, arguably 20 runs below par.

Prabhsimran and Iyer Make the Chase Look Routine
The chase began with Ghazanfar claiming two wickets in the powerplay to make it 45 for 2, briefly bringing MI back into the contest. But Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer shut that window quickly.
Iyer, walking in at a tricky moment, cover-drove his first ball for four and never looked troubled. He scored 66 off 35 balls — his third successive IPL half-century — before falling to Shardul Thakur. Prabhsimran was even more brutal. He ended unbeaten on 80 off 39 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, taking his IPL 2026 tally to 211 runs in just 122 balls across the tournament.
The pair added 139 for the third wicket, and the game was effectively over by the 13th over. Jasprit Bumrah, wicketless in six straight IPL games now, finished without reward. PBKS knocked off the remaining runs easily, winning with 21 balls to spare.
With 9 points from 5 games, Punjab Kings now sit at the top, displacing RCB. MI, sitting ninth with just one win, faces serious questions heading into the rest of the tournament.
