The debate on the India call-up of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has moved from the cricket field to the BCCI corridors. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal went public on Friday night, posting on X that the 15-year-old deserves to wear the senior India jersey, and to do so as the nation’s youngest-ever debutant.
What Dhumal Said About Sooryavanshi’s India Call-Up
Dhumal did not mince words. He termed the IPL 2026 campaign by Sooryavanshi as an incredible batting show and that a talented player like that and at such a young age is not easily found. His post was a direct impetus to the BCCI.
“This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for Team India as the youngest given his performances,” said Dhumal in his post on X.
“It’s rare you get a chance to pick up someone so talented and sooooo young. Certainly deserves his name to be recorded as youngest debutant for India.”
This was posted the same day after Sooryavanshi had demolished the Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowling attack in Guwahati. He hit a savage 78 with only 26 balls, crushing Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, surpassing teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal to the top of the IPL 2026 Orange Cap table. Of his 78 runs, 74 came in boundaries, underlining his complete dominance over world-class bowlers.
The IPL 2026 Numbers of Sooryavanshi are the Case Maker.
Sooryavanshi has 200 runs in four games and a strike rate of over 200, which makes him the star of IPL 2026. He scored his half-century in just 15 balls against RCB, the quickest fifty of the season, a record he had set himself against CSK.

Rajasthan Royals chased down 202 with two overs to spare and six wickets in hand. His innings single-handedly flipped the game before Dhruv Jurel finished it off.
Even Virat Kohli took notice. After the game against Sooryavanshi, Kohli signed a cap and wrote, “Dear Vaibhav, well done,” which quickly went viral on social media.
Why Anil Kumble wants everyone to slow down.
Not everyone agrees with Dhumal. Anil Kumble, the former India captain, opposed the rush, telling on Friday that the kid must not be rushed.
Kumble likened the scenario to that of Sachin Tendulkar, a teenager who could not be left out due to his sheer consistency in the late 1980s. He intended for his batting to respond to the question, not to social media pressure or public opinion.
He admitted that Sooryavanshi is doing the right thing. But he also said that it is not right to press a 15-year-old with a global deadline.
“At this point in time, it’s a bit of pressure on a young lad to say, ‘I want you to play for India in two months’ time,'” Kumble said.

The Real Question: Is 15 Too Young to Play International Cricket?
India has a history on both sides of this argument. Tendulkar debuted at 16. Others were in a hurry and lost their footing. The contrast to Sooryavanshi is that his IPL figures against the best international bowlers like Bumrah, Hazlewood, and Bhuvneshwar are not fortuitous. They are on a four-game trend.
The ideology of Sooryavanshi is simple: he plays his natural game and does not consider the reputation of the bowler he has to play. It is that attitude at 15 that is the subject of conversation.
The BCCI has not responded publicly to Dhumal’s appeal. But with the IPL still going on, Sooryavanshi does not appear to be relenting. The debate will only get noisier.
