The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking a strong approach to make sure the IPL 2025 venues remain in top condition. To maintain the highest standards of pitch quality and outfield conditions, the BCCI has set rules for state cricket associations about the use of stadiums ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. These rules are all about keeping the playing surfaces in good condition to help deliver the high quality cricket during the tournament.
No Practice Sessions or Private Matches at IPL Stadiums
In order to protect the IPL stadiums from being overused, the BCCI has strictly prohibited IPL franchises from using these venues for practice sessions, before the tournament starts. The board has also stopped private matches like celebrity cricket games and Legends League Cricket (LLC) events from taking place at any IPL 2025 venue.
Rule Change for Ranji Trophy Knockouts
Despite the strict rules, BCCI has made one exception for the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. If any of the IPL venues are selected to host the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals, semifinals and final, they will be allowed to continue with those fixtures. Currently, the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals are being played in Kolkata, Pune, Rajkot and Nagpur, with Eden Gardens being the only IPL venue used. For this, the state association must ensure that pitch and outfield should be in top condition before the start of the IPL 2025 on March 24.
BCCI’s Directives to State Associations
To maintain the pitch and outfield in the best condition, the BCCI has sent a formal notice to all state associations hosting the IPL matches. The board made the following points clear:
- The main square and outfield can be used for Ranji Trophy knockout matches if scheduled at the venue.
- No local matches,celebrity league events or the Legends League Cricket should be held at these grounds.
- IPL teams should not be allowed to use the main square and outfield for practice sessions before the tournament starts.
Impact on IPL Franchises and Venue Preparations
The decision made by BCCI directly affects the IPL teams that were planning to hold pre-season training at these stadiums. Since practice grounds outside the main stadiums are not available in some cities, teams will need to find alternative venues. This is especially difficult for teams based in Kolkata, Mumbai, and a few other places, where dedicated practice facilities are limited.

Franchises now face the challenges of finding suitable training venues ahead of the IPL 2025.
