Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer, etched his name into the corridors of the IPL on May 7, 2026, when he took the field against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. With that appearance, he became the first fast bowler ever to play 200 matches in the Indian Premier League. The milestone comes on the back of an already historic IPL 2026 season for the veteran seamer, who has been in superb form for the defending champions.
Bhuvneshwar was included in RCB’s playing XI after captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and chose to bowl first. Though RCB lost against LSG by 9 runs, Kumarβs inclusion alone was enough to make headlines, as no pace bowler in the tournament’s 19-year history had reached this appearance landmark before him.
A Season Full of Records for Bhuvneshwar
This is not the first big achievement Bhuvneshwar has made this season. He took 200 wickets in the IPL, becoming the first bowler and second pacer in the history of the tournament. Only the all-time wicket-taker leading with 224 wickets before him is Yuzvendra Chahal.
On April 30, he joined Chahal as the first Indian bowler to achieve 350 wickets in T20 cricket in all formats in Ahmedabad against Gujarat Titans.
Bhuvneshwar is currently in the lead of the Purple Cap table with 17 wickets in his nine matches. His three wickets in 28 balls for Gujarat Titans highlighted his continued effectiveness at this level.
What Bhuvneshwar Said About the Milestone
Speaking after the match against Lucknow Super Giants, Bhuvneshwar kept his words straightforward.
“It is indeed special. Any milestone is, really, and playing 200 matches is, in itself, a massive achievement. So, naturally, I am feeling very happy.”
He also pointed to the team environment as something that made the occasion more meaningful.
“The best part is that I am achieving this with a team that won the trophy last year and is playing exceptionally well this season. That makes it even better.”
When asked to pick a standout moment from his long IPL career, he pointed to the very beginning.

“It is very difficult to pick just one, but if I absolutely had to name something special, I would choose my debut wicket. My journey began so many years ago, and that very first wicket is always something special.”
On surviving in a format that has only grown more aggressive for bowlers, he was direct.
“It has certainly been demanding, especially considering the way the format itself has evolved. Given the aggressive approach batsmen are adopting during the Powerplay, it is always a challenging task to keep improving. What has worked for me personally is the consistent focus on strengthening my basics.”

Where Bhuvneshwar Stands Among IPL’s Most Experienced Players
Bhuvneshwar is just the 12th player in the history of IPL to reach the milestone of 200 appearances. He is joining MS Dhoni (278), Rohit Sharma (277), and Virat Kohli (276) in the list. Interestingly, every one of the players on the list is a batter or a wicketkeeper-batter. Bhuvneshwar is the only specialist pace bowler in the group.
He is also the only bowler to win back-to-back Purple Caps, having picked up 23 wickets in 2016 and 26 in 2017 for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 36, is one of the most consistent bowlers in the tournament, and the numbers he posted in 2026 indicate that the records could continue.
