Betting Cases to Spot-Fixing | Listing Down the Most Notorious IPL Fixing Scandals.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular and acclaimed leagues in the world that attracts several million of viewers every season. Nevertheless, despite the glitz and popularity, the league has had its share of scandals. One of the darkest moments in the league’s history, however, is the IPL’s efforts to clean up scandals, which are directly related to the issues of illegal betting and corruption.

Not only have these scandals led to the tarnishing of the IPL’s image, but they have also compelled the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to implement a more stringent policy in an effort to restore the tournament’s integrity. The different issues, including whether IPL matches are fixed, have always been raised in the popular discourse, and some people have argued that they have evidence of match fixing in certain IPL matches. It is a common argument among fans as to which is no 1 fixing team in IPL in relation to the past scandals and suspensions.

The list below displays the most notorious IPL fixing scandals that shook the league:

2012 IPL Spot Fixing Sting Operation

The IPL received its first huge IPL fixing scandal in 2012 when a TV sting operation by India TV caught a number of uncapped players negotiations over spot fixing in the IPL.

The video showed the players agreeing to deal with each other to bowl no-balls intentionally or give away runs to earn money. One of the TPs, TP Sudhindra, who was implicated in the PL fixing, was banned by the BCCI, and other players involved were suspended with sentences ranging from one month to life.

The IPL spot-fixing scandal served as a wake-up call, highlighting the IPL’s susceptibility to corruption, particularly among young and financially vulnerable homegrown players. This scandal prompted the BCCI to take anti-corruption measures more seriously, including mandatory education and increased awareness among players.

The case made the spot fixing in IPL clear to the masses, as well as established that fixers in IPL were actively targeting players. The facts left analysts wondering which is no 1 fixing team in IPL.

2013 Rajasthan Royals Spot-Fixing Case

The most dramatic scandal occurred in the 2013 IPL season when Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, and Ajit Chandila, players of the Rajasthan Royals, were arrested on allegations of match-fixing in the IPL. This scandal also cast doubt on which is the no 1 fixing team in IPL due to repeated fixing in successive seasons.

They were caught fixing specific overs, confirming suspicions about fixing IPL team practices.

The police uncovered that the players also agreed to alter certain overs in return for money offered by bookies. The participants had been recorded on camera, and connections with bookies were very obvious. This raised concerns about which team is match fixing in IPL and which individuals were involved, leading to life bans for the players.

The effect of this scandal was immense since Sreesanth was an international cricketer and an Indian hero in the 2007 T20 World Cup. The three players were given life bans by the BCCI, and the Rajasthan Royals faced a huge investigation. Although the criminal charges were later dismissed due to a lack of evidence, the reputational harm caused by the IPL fixing to the league was severe, and the IPL had to tighten its anti-corruption policy.

2013 Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra Betting Scandal

Just days after the Rajasthan Royals players were arrested, the IPL faced another CSK betting scandal of a different magnitude. Gurunath Meiyappan, an official of the Chennai Super Kings, was arrested for illegal betting. This reinforced the fact that Chennai Super Kings’ fixing was not limited to players.

Players were involved in this scandal, and this raised issues of Dhoni and match fixing rumors, yet Dhoni was never directly implicated in any capacity as a Dhoni match fixer.

He was found to have been in direct contact with bookmakers and was allegedly betting on IPL cricket match-fixing and leaking inside information. This exposed the IPL to corruption at the top management level.

Additionally, another co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, Raj Kundra, was also involved in illegal IPL fixing, which caused significant repercussions for both him and the teams in question.

This led to severe punishment for CSK and RR, and the Lodha Committee of the Supreme Court suggested that the two franchises should be suspended for the entirety of two full IPL seasons (2016 and 2017).

2015 Suspension of CSK and Rajasthan Royals

In 2015, the CSK match fixing case struck another setback, whereby not just one but two teams were banned for two years following the implication of their officials in unlawful betting activities.

The 2015 case resulted in CSK and RR being banned for 2 years because of the involvement of top officials in betting. After the announcement of suspensions, analysts were still arguing on which is no 1 fixing team in IPL.

Why were CSK & RR BANNED for 2 years ?

This was a suspension never seen in the history of sports leagues. The Lodha Committee’s recommendation followed an inquiry into the IPL fixing practices of Meiyappan and Kundra, which revealed that the teams had not met the elementary standards of integrity.

Many asked why CSK was banned for how many years and the CSK ban reason, both clarified by the Lodha Committee.

The CSK vs RR match fixing andΒ  suspensions caused the two teams to be eliminated in the IPL in 2016 and 2017.

This ruling not only affected the credibility of the IPL but also compelled the league to adopt even more stringent governance and monitoring mechanisms. It also raised debates about the king of IPL fixing, with CSK often cited as the most fixing team in IPL. Two new teams were introduced to replace the suspended seasons: the Gujarat Lions and the Rising Pune Supergiant.

The 2015 CSK Match-Fixing Scandal: How It Unfolded?

The CSK match fixing scandal of 2015 remains one of the most infamous incidents in IPL history. Chennai Super Kings, one of the most winning and popular teams in the IPL, was found to be a match fixing team in IPL that led to a two-season suspension of the franchise in 2015.

The scandal led to the Chennai Super Kings ban year (2016-2017), during which IPL continued without the team. Fans still discuss CSK fixed matches and question which is the fixing team in IPL. Analysts also considered this period when asking who is the most fixing team in IPL.

The scandal involved Gurunath Meiyappan, a senior official of CSK and the son-in-law of former BCCI president N. Srinivasan. Meiyappan was also caught gambling and leaking information to bookies illegally. This case was also unique in that, unlike the 2013 Rajasthan Royals spot-fixing scandal, which involved only the players, CSK match fixing players and officials were implicated directly, bringing into question how the league is governed at the highest level.

The implication of an official such as Meiyappan being involved in CSK match fixing was unprecedented and it pointed out inefficiencies not only in the players. Whereas the 2013 case involving the Rajasthan Royals demonstrated how bookies can target players, the 2016 CSK scandal showed how the league was systemically flawed, with even those in management being tempted to compromise the integrity of the sport.

The scandal raised concerns about the IPL fixing captain and the degree of control and responsibility in the IPL franchises.

Was the Ban Enough? And What’s Next for IPL Integrity?

CSK was suspended for two years in 2015, which sends a strong message, but also raises important questions. Was the punishment deep enough, or was it just a way of ending the issue of things? The ban was directed at a small list of individuals, yet was that to solve the fundamental issues in the franchise, and the bigger IPL fixing machine?

The 2013 spot-fixing scandal, and the 2015 CSK betting case, showed that there was some degree of corruption in the structure of the league.

Reports of an alleged match fixing team in IPL 2021 resurfaced in online discussions, though no official confirmation was ever made, showing how public perception still connects newer seasons to the legacy of IPL fixing controversies.

While the league strengthened anti-corruption measures, the involvement of management and players in scandals proved that match fixing teams in IPL 2021 and 2022 incidents could still occur. Also, reports of MI match fixing in later seasons fueled these debates, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

But by prohibiting teams and individuals, perhaps it was not sufficient to actually change the culture of governance in the league. The question that arises in the future due to these scandals is: Is IPL match fixed today?

Even though the IPL has intensified its anti-corruption efforts, the recent rise of online betting and online match-fixing rings is a new challenge. Do the existing measures provide sufficient protection to the integrity of the game or do they still allow new ways of corruption to creep in?

The IPL will need to continually upgrade its protective measures to stay ahead of new threats; however, does the existing strategy have sufficient measures in place to eradicate corruption? The question of which is the no 1 fixing team in IPL today remains popular.

Amit Mishra’s Take

The IPL has had its share of problems, particularly in terms of fixing and betting scandals. The most remarkable thing is that the IPL is changing and re-forming after every crisis.

The rumors around a so-called Dhoni match fixer narrative were widely circulated by fans online, yet investigations and official reports found no evidence linking him directly to any IPL fixing case.

From the Chennai Super Kings spot-fixing scandal to the 2015 fixing scandal, the league has learned that IPL fixing controversies can involve both players and management.

The match fixing in IPL in 2013 and the more recent issues with CSK suspension in 2015, have compelled the BCCI to implement stringent anti-corruption protocols, which up to date, have served to protect the integrity of the tournament.

The suspension of CSK was a big achievement, and it showed that no team is above the rules. Today, the IPL is a more transparent and powerful tournament; however, the emergence of digital betting and offshore syndicates poses a threat to its integrity.

Although officially, no new match fixing team in the IPL 2021 or 2022 has been found, the league is under unceasing investigation. The progression of the CSK betting scandal into the digital age of betting underscores the need for continued vigilance on the issue of IPL cricket match-fixing.

With the introduction of anti-corruption measures, the IPL continues to protect its image, though questions about which team is the most fixing team in the IPL and fixers persist.
