Kolkata Knight Riders have confirmed the signing of Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement player ahead of the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League, which gets underway on March 28.
The announcement ends days of speculation among KKR supporters, who had been waiting for the franchise to name a replacement since Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released in January.
A Replacement with a Political Backdrop
Mustafizur Rahman’s departure from Eden Gardens was not driven by form or fitness. KKR dropped the left-arm seamer following the political tensions that developed between India and Bangladesh earlier this year.
His exit left a gap in a pace attack that already had questions to answer after the franchise’s disappointing 2025 campaign, and the club wasted little time in identifying Muzarabani as the man to fill it.
The 29-year-old right-arm pacer stands at 6ft 8in and has built a reputation as one of the most difficult fast bowlers to face in T20 cricket. He bowls with steep bounce that is hard to generate on flat subcontinental pitches, and he has shown the ability to take wickets at the start of an innings as well as at the death. KKR’s statement on Friday underlined those qualities.
“Muzarabani brings significant T20 experience, having claimed over 90 wickets in more than 80 T20 Internationals at an average of around 21, with best figures of 3/8. His pace and consistency across global leagues and international cricket add further depth to KKR’s pace attack heading into the season,” the franchise said.
What he showed at the T20 World Cup

Muzarabani played a central role in Zimbabwe’s campaign at the T20 World Cup, held in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. He finished with 13 wickets from six matches and was named in the ICC Team of the Tournament. His performances in Zimbabwe’s two biggest victories were particularly notable.
Against Australia, he returned figures of 4/17, restricting the 2021 champions to a total that Zimbabwe were able to chase down. That win helped Zimbabwe advance to the Super 8 stage. Against co-hosts Sri Lanka, on what was described as a flat pitch, he took 2/38 to help secure another victory. Even in the defeat to India, where Suryakumar Yadav‘s side posted 256 runs, the second highest total in T20 World Cup history, Muzarabani held his own with figures of 1/43.

Arrival and contract details
Muzarabani is expected to arrive in India on March 17. KKR have not disclosed the financial terms of his contract. He will join a squad captained by Ajinkya Rahane, which is looking to recover after a poor 2025 season in which the defending champions finished eighth on the points table with just five wins.
KKR’s opening fixtures
KKR open their campaign on March 29 against five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. They then return to Eden Gardens for three successive home matches, facing Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2, Punjab Kings on April 6, and Lucknow Super Giants on April 9.
The remainder of the schedule has not yet been released, as the IPL is waiting for the Election Commission to announce assembly election dates for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Assam before confirming fixtures beyond the first 16 days.
The IPL 2026 season begins on March 28.
