The Chennai Super Kings are back for another IPL season, and this time they return with a point to prove. After a difficult 2025 campaign that saw them finish tenth, the five-time champions have revamped their squad and are gearing up for what they hope will be a title-winning run in IPL 2026. 

Ruturaj Gaikwad leads the side once again, and the full schedule released by the BCCI lays out a demanding but navigable path through the league stage.

A Season Built on Redemption

Finishing last in the standings in IPL 2025 was an uncharacteristic low for a franchise with CSK’s pedigree. The management responded decisively in the off-season, making some significant moves to reshape the squad. 

The most headline-grabbing of these was the acquisition of Sanju Samson via trade. Samson’s arrival adds a match-winning wicketkeeper-batter to the lineup and gives CSK a dynamic option at the top or middle order depending on team needs.

Beyond Samson, the franchise invested heavily in uncapped domestic talent, signing Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for 14.20 crore rupees each. These signings signal a deliberate shift toward building long-term depth while maintaining competitive strength in the short term. 

Alongside established names like MS Dhoni, Shivam Dube, and Noor Ahmad, young guns Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis add an exciting dimension to the batting order. The bowling attack, led by Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, and Matt Henry, looks well-balanced across formats and conditions.

Group Stage Format and Fixture Logic

CSK are placed in Group A for IPL 2026 alongside Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings. Under the format adopted this season, they will face each of their group opponents once and meet teams from Group B, which includes Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants, twice each.

That cross-group fixture arrangement means CSK will play ten of their fourteen league matches against Group B opponents. Two notable rivalries emerge from this structure. The clash against Mumbai Indians is split across two venues, with the first meeting at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 23, followed by the return fixture at Chepauk on May 2. Similarly, Delhi Capitals appear twice on the schedule, once in Chennai on April 11 and again in Delhi on May 5.

Home Fortress at Chepauk

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, popularly known as Chepauk, will host seven of CSK’s 14 league matches. The venue is one of the most spin-friendly surfaces in Indian cricket, and CSK have historically exploited those conditions to great effect. Gaikwad’s side will aim to make their home record count this season, particularly given how critical those wins could be when the playoff picture takes shape.

The home schedule includes fixtures against Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans. Notably, CSK will close out their home portion of the league stage with three of their final four matches at Chepauk, a run that spans May 10 to May 21. That late-season home advantage could prove decisive in their playoff qualification push.

Away Schedule: Testing Trips Across India

CSK’s away fixtures take them to Guwahati, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Lucknow. The season opens on the road, with the clash against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30 at 7:30 PM IST. It is a fixture that comes with its own narrative, as former CSK skipper Sanju Samson will now face his old team wearing yellow.

The away trip to Bengaluru on April 5 against RCB is the only meeting between the two sides in the league stage this season, making it a fixture neither team will want to drop points in. The visit to Hyderabad on April 18 to face Sunrisers will test CSK’s batting against one of the most aggressive sides in the competition. 

Away fixtures in Ahmedabad on April 26 and Delhi on May 5 add further variety to the travel schedule. CSK will also play two afternoon matches: one away at Ahmedabad and one at home against Lucknow Super Giants on May 10, both starting at 3:30 PM IST.

Coaching Staff and Leadership

Ruturaj Gaikwad returns as captain after being ruled out midway through IPL 2025 due to injury. His return to full fitness will be crucial, both as a top-order batter and as a leader who commands respect in the dressing room. 

Head coach Stephen Fleming continues in his role, bringing continuity and strategic experience to the setup. Michael Hussey handles batting coaching duties, while Eric Simons and Sridharan Sriram oversee the bowling unit. James Foster rounds out the support staff as fielding coach.
